Sporadic Connection Drops

Hello,

I just downloaded Windows 7 yesterday using the student discount program they set up (Only 30 dollars to do so.) I did an upgrade from the 32 bit version of Vista to 7, and everything seemed to go smoothly.

The only problems I am having is that I am having sporadic and intermittent connection drops from my wireless router. It happens when I'm playing an online game, talking to friends using chat programs, browsing the internet, or even just leaving it here(I was reading a book and saw the disconnection happen while I wasn't doing anything on it).

My wifi is Atheros AR5007 802.11b/g WiFi Adapter, and one of the things I did was uninstall and reinstall that same driver(which is compatible with Vista), but I still have the problem. I even read somewhere to try and disable IPv6 to see if that works, but the problem continues to persist.

I am on an HP Pavilion laptop dv6700, and the router itself is Netgear. Any help would be appreciated.

I forget my router, linksys or d-link, but my laptop (running vista) does the same thing. The only solution i found was to wait it out which could take days or reset the router. I'm in for a better solution

I'm a car guy but I got "a great deal" on my system and I want to upgrade it to make it a cool lil machine that can rival the one with fancy cases. Eventually this will be my HTPC. I might keep it all this this case as I become more experienced to give it that sleeper look
On the router, set the Beacon Interval = 500
change the channel you're currently using
and make transmit power = 100%

Also, I just got through doing a chat with Microsoft Tech support and they took over the desktop using East Assist and they weren't able to solve the problem. So again, if you guys know anything, it's appreciated. Or else I'll have to try to restore my computer to factory settings with Vista, which is a waste of the money I spent on 7.

edit: Okay I'll try those

Not sure if this helps but I opened up Event Viewer to see waht it was saying everytime I experienced a disconnect.

This is what I got

The IP address lease 192.168.1.2 for the Network Card with network address 0x001F3A5F6829 has been denied by the DHCP server 192.168.1.1 (The DHCP Server sent a DHCPNACK message).

Set a static ip address for the network adapter in Windows and the problem is resolved.

Alternatively, set the lease time in DHCP setting on router to greatest possible. Usually 99 days.

Gah I'm sorry....How do I set a static IP for the network adapter? Do I go to Network and Internet in the control panel or do I do that in the router set up?

Sorry, this is my weakest area of knowledge in terms of computers...

Edit: Okay, I went to the router set up and set it to static IP. I'll let you know if this helps! :-)

You set a static ip in Network and Sharing center. Click local area connections. Click Properties box. Double click IPv4 line.

Okay well..do you still want me to keep the router settings as Dynamically receive from ISP? Or do I change the router to static as well (The option is available)

Also, my local area connection is disconnected because I am not on an ethernet cable, I am using wireless. So I went to properties of my wireless and doubled licked the IPv4 and selected "use the following IP addresses"

I then filled in the blanks with the IP addresses that were on the router page, but when I finished it said that there was already ac omputer with that same IP connected to the network...What did I do wrong?

Reset the router back to factory settings. The manual will tell you how to do this.

Then setup static ip address in Windows as I said above.

Okay, I put in the first two spaces and left the rest blank. Unless there are specific Ip's I need to put int he other fields as well?

I put in the IP I get when I view sites like whatsmyip.com

and I also put the subnet mask Ip to go along with it.

When I do this, it says that there is already another computer with that same IP on the network and it won't let me connect. Any ideas?

Well, I've entered some IP's int he slots. Things were sporadic at first, but I just altered a few of the numbers a bit..so we'll see.

I'll update if I continue to drop.

Update: Not even a minute after posting this I was dropped. Here are the IP's I used.
