SRS Premium Sound problem

I' ve got a problem with my sound card driver. I have an Asus N61jv notebook win7 x64, with a Realtek HD Audio Driver and SRS Premium Sound Enhancement installed, but it doesn't work properly. I mean, SRS PS Control Panel works, doesn't display that I have incompatible device, detects plugged headphones, but it does nothing. I changing settings results in nothing but a slider movement, just like it wasn't turned on. Does anyone have an idea if this is fixable w/ reinstalling OS?

Yes, I've already tried that one, and few others, with proper cleaning up after every install. But it still won't budge.

Yes, both sources are working. It's just that SRS won't make any improvement.

So you want a placebo surround sound effect and can't get it to function?

Well, I would disagree about 'placebo' effect of SRS enhancement. It used to work last time, when I listened to the music a week ago, when everything was alright and today I put on my headphones and noticed difference, so it isn't as placebo as you think. Anyway, I don't want to argue, I just want it to work.

When I say placebo it is just an effect as a laptop has marginal sound as is and by creating this effect it makes the space between the speakers sound wider. Good news is you have sound. Bad news is an effect you had before has now gone away or has been turned off. When was the last time it worked and what updates/changes have been made or have you made since it worked?

Well, I don't really know. I've been busy for a while, so I didn't have time to just sit and listen, so everything I can say, it used to work, and now it doesn't Windows kept updating all the time, none of other drivers were changed, didn't use any system messing software... I must admit, the os wouldn't mind a reinstall, but I want to find out what causes the problem...

My point is if this happened two days ago then you could try a restore point earlier than that and see what that does? I also take it you know your way around the software and how to use it. Could by chance the effects be so subtle that you can't hear them over the internal speakers but with headphones or powered speakers it becomes clearer? Could the SRS have a slider which makes the amount of sound change vary and could this be set in a minimal setting? Lastly no offence was intended with "placebo" but merely that this is a effect and in such can only try to emulate a true multichannel surround sound system which of course it can't fully. Maybe "Pseudo" would have been a better word to use?

Yeah, I've totally forgotten about System Restore, so I gave it a try, but i only took me 4 days back, and didn't helped at all... I've checked the system few times, found nothing malicious, and yet it doesn't work. No, SRS is set correctly, what's more, it seems to be not detecting anything from sound card, as there are volume meters for both channels, and they don't show anything. No offence taken, I know it won't turn my laptop speakers into 5.1 home cinema set, but I had it configured so it sounded a little bit nicer to me. And yes, 'pseudo' would sound better, but i just simply shouldn't start it at first place, sorry. Well, it's not something I can't live without, it just bugs me why it doesn't work.

Some of these sound issues are crazy and often it's a unforeseen change or setting which will be found. Just remember you have sound and that's good. You can try an older restore point but it may not make the change back. Good luck and keep us informed what you find, hopefully someone else here has some additional comments.

It's kind of late, but for what it's worth, I had the same problem (I'm using an Asus K52Jr) and I was able to fix it by pressing the reset button on the Smart Audio control panel. It can be accessed through the Hardware and Sound section of the Control Panel. There is a tiny dropdown arrow on the top right of the screen. Click it and then click reset. Hope that helps.
