Start menu not working, icons not appearing...

So last night I left my laptop on and it downloaded and restarted following a Windows Update. When I log in, my icons (on my desktop, on my taskbar) are not showing. The start menu also does not appear, when clicked OR when the windows key is clicked.

Windows Explorer (explorer.exe) "stopped working" almost immediately each time I rebooted. I have ended the task and create the new task of explorer.exe through the Task Manager but that doesn't accomplish anything, the icons are still missing and the start menu doesn't work.

I restored to a previous save of Windows from a few days ago previous to this issue but the problem is still consistent.

I'm losing patience browsing through various websites and forums and would appreciate any advice or suggestions to find a solution to my problem.

With Thanks,
Mark.

Mark, try creating a new account via Control Panel, User Accounts. See if the problem exists or not. If not then the old account is corrupted so what you can do is copy everything from your old account to the new one (hopefully not the corruption which is usually registry related).

See here: Fix a corrupted user profile

I created a new user account but the problem did not disappear.

I have also tried sfc /scannow but got the response "did not find any integrity violations".

Are there any other tips/suggestions to try and solve this issue? Would appreciate any help! Thanks.
