Solved Startup Strange

Howdy

Ive been doing some work on my friends computer. He has a Gigabyte Ultra Durable 3 Motherboard. (he has windows 7 ultimate x86)

Firstly when you start it up it goes to the Gigabyte Ultra Durable 3 screen (normal) and then the display flashes off and then the Gigabyte Durable 3 screen comes back and then it goes to the DMI pool screen and then it says starting windows. Then the monitor turns off and then say 30 seconds later the monitor comes back on and it goes welcome screen and then desktop. All in all it gets there.

My computer on the other hand (I have Windows 7 Home premium x64) also Gigabyte Durable 3 Mboard does it all in one smooth motion, no loss of monitor part way through.

Tell me is that an issue or just the peculiarity of different motherboards?

I would think that both should behave the same way. Unless your friend has made any changes to the Bios.

Na he doesn't know how to make bios changes. I suspect it has been like that for a while. Its just since Ive been working on it lately that Ive picked up on it.

Do I need to worry about this or can I fix it? Like I said it is working OK.

Probably don't have to "worry" about it, but couldn't hurt to see if you can "fix" it. Have you ran a sfc /scannow on it yet?

Hi there,

Sounds like you could both be on different versions of BIOS. Go to the Gigabyte website and update both your PC and your friends to the latest.

Probably different bios versions. My PC is almost brand new and his maybe 5yrs old

Ive heard that updating bios can be tricky and potentially catastrophic if done incorrectly.

Or am I thinking about something different. How hard is it to do?

Did the PC in question have Win8 installed upon it? Because this is typical of Win8 behavior when Dual Booting with Win7, after choosing Win7 to boot. If residual code from the Dual Boot remains in the boot sector it could continue doing this even after Win8 is uninstalled.

To clear the boot sector of all code before reinstall wipe it with Diskpart Clean Command.

As this solves about half of all install problems it may also solve your friend's anomaly which pertains to booting even if he didn't have Win8.

Research the BIOS version differences and how a BIOS update is to be done. It may also tell you the exact issues a newer BIOS version remedies.

Yes he just recently he tried windows 8 but didnt like it. He uninstalled it and put the windows 7 back on it. It had this messed up dual boot screen that used to come up. I ended up using msconfig on it and deleting the windows 8 startup entry.

So what do I do? Diskpart Clean Command. How do I do that?

Reading through it quickly im not totally sure about it. I want to do it so I don't loose data right. Is that there?

The Clean command will delete, overwrite all data on the drive so you can get a good new install. You will need to back up anything you want to save then transfer it back to the new install. By back up I mean save your data to some external media, such as another HDD or to DVDs or flash sticks.

Really I don't think I want it that bad. Looks a little involved. I think Ill see how the PC goes. Its going well. Just a little messed up in the start up. Once up and running its flying

What I am interested in knowing though is how do you format the C drive whilst installing windows 7? I couldn't see the function when I reinstalled my Win 7

If I can achieve the same result as the Clean function by reformatting my c drive then ill do that. I just need u to tell me how to do that.

If you're going to reinstall then you should run the quick diskpart Clean Command first to clear the boot sector. Your data should always be backed up anyway and certainly during a reinstall.

To access the Command Line, when you boot into the installer to reinstall access DISKPART At PC Startup. After running the 5 second Diskpart Clean Command , close the Command Box then click install now and follow the steps in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 to get a perfect install.

ok tried diskpart clean. I got the elevated command prompt via cmd, open as admin. I first tried to get command prompt through startup-shift+f10. No response after pressing those keys together.

Thought I had it all happening when I finally got to the elevated command prompt.

Any way disk part came back with an error stating- virtual disk service error-clean is not allowed on the current disk containing the current boot, system, page file, crashdump or hybernation volume

Also I think your right about the windows 8 fragments Whilst in the windows setup disk I selected repair to see what it would do. It said it found a problem with startup files or something like that.

It ended up restoring the windows 8 entry into startup sequence. I later removed it with msconfig.

Did you have a w7 DVD or repair disk in?
