If I am typing a document or doing something with another piece of software (other than my email), and my email client (which is set to check for mail every 15 minutes) downloads some email, the email client takes the focus away from what I was doing. Why is this so and how can I change it? My email client is Eudora.

I haven't used Eudora in years...good times :D
Have you tried to minimize it (so it runs from the icon tray ) ?
As well you could check if

under Tools > Options > Getting attention no options are checked except play a sound.

and under Tools > Options > Background Tasks options Bring error window to front or Bring task window to front aren't checked.

Thanks. "Bring Task Status To Front" was checked. I unchecked it.
