Steam and other Executables can't start, YouTube only works on Chrome.

Recently, I've just installed a few updates for my laptop and suddenly things went haywire. The Steam icon on the right hand of the taskbar was missing, so I attempted to start Steam and it wouldn't pop up. The loading and updating windows appeared, but not steam itself. The same thing happens to Weather Bug, War Thunder (independently), and Windows Media Center so I assume it has something to do with how the executable is launched.

There's also a problem with Adobe Flash Player as well. I also just installed an update for it and right now the only way for me to watch YouTube videos is only on chrome. On other browsers, it crashes.

Any ideas on how to fix these issues?

If you have a restore point from before this occurred, roll your system back to that time.

See: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/700-system-restore.html

The tutorial (tut) name is a little confusing, but that's the term MS uses - you're not doing an re-install, so don't worry about that.

Both options in the tut do the same thing in different ways.

Go to the folder you have steam installed on and find the application with the Steam logo which says application, that is the exe file and start it and see if Steam starts.

Just a thought.

Be very careful where and how you update Adobe Flash Player.
Their are many false Adobe Updates.
Only use the Adobe website.

...interestingly I just did an update for Adobe Reader - which promptly crashed Explorer, and forced me to reboot (for the first time in a week) ...and yes, it was a real update! I then had to do a repair of the Adobe installation (which broke my preferred settings - for Foxit) to stop getting 'Adobe reader' crashes every time I clicked on an Explorer page.

You should be able to change from automatic updates in Adobe to let me decide, which I have, but the last update didn't bother anything, so I'll be on the lookout for the next one and do a restore setting before.

Most people don't realize you can set options for flash player and a lot of other settings including privatization settings here http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager06.html

Hi Steve,

I recently recommended (in the past week) the Flash Global settings in another thread and while I was posting links, I came across this:
Adobe - Flash Player : Settings Manager
Adobe Flash Player said:
Who uses this Settings Manager?

Beginning with Flash Player 10.3, the Local Settings Manager supersedes this Online Settings Manager for managing global settings on Windows, Mac, and Linux computers.
The Local Settings Manager can be accessed in the Control Panel on Windows and in System Preferences on Mac. Users of other operating systems and earlier versions of Flash Player can continue to use the Online Settings Manager described here.

To access the local Flash Player Settings Manager that is native to your operating system:
•Windows: click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Flash Player
•Macintosh: System Preferences (under Other) click Flash Player
•Linux Gnome: System > Preferences > Adobe Flash Player
•Linux KDE: System Settings > Adobe Flash Player

To access Help for the local Settings Manager, click any of the individual Learn more…. links on the Settings Manager tabs, or click any of these links:

Flash Player Local Settings Manager * Storage
Flash Player Local Settings Manager * Camera and Mic
Flash Player Local Settings Manager * Playback
Flash Player Local Settings Manager * Advanced

This is contrary to what I knew, Global Settings used to supersede Local Settings.

Just thought I'd pass that tidbit along.

Bill

It's a wash - you add something to the list of things you know and add something to the list of things you thought you knew.

Adobe should post that information on every Global Settings page in big red letters!

Well I just fixed the Adobe Flash problem but the program launch problem persists. From what I've read in the updates, there were 11 of them that were installed June 11th and one of them is an AMD Display update which I think might be the problem. If not, then it has to be one or more the other 10 updates by Microsoft. Their update ID's are the following:

Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 - June 2014 (KB890830)

Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2957509)

Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2957189)

Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2939576)

Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2800095)

Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2965788)

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2957689)

Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2957503)

Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2952664)

Definition Update for Microsoft Security Essentials - KB2310138 (Definition 1.175.1952.0)

If any of you know something about these updates, please let me know!

It's most likely NOT either of these:

Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 - June 2014 (KB890830)
This is an on demand scan that runs every month with new virus definitions

Definition Update for Microsoft Security Essentials - KB2310138 (Definition 1.175.1952.0)
This is the virus definitions for MSE

Neither would cause issues, I don't think.

It's most likely the driver update - but lets have a look at the background as well...

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data
If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Also, please upload the C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log file (compressed)

Just for information.

Automatic. The version of this tool delivered by Windows Update runs on your computer once a month, in the background. If an infection is found, the tool will display a status report the next time you start your computer. If you would like to run this tool more than once a month, run the version that is available from this Web page or use the version on the Malicious Software Removal Tool Web site.

Free Malware Removal Tool | Anti-Malware Scan Software

To me this means that it will run in the background automatically if you have your Windows Updates set to automatic install updates.

Back to my hole.

Well the flash player problem occurred again and I think I have no choice but to reinstall Windows on my laptop. I did it before when similar problems were occurring that time. I believe you can reinstall Windows as many times as you want as long as it's on the same computer. If any of you disagree with my option and suggest another option into fixing the problem, please let me know.

A reinstall will certainly solve almost any issue, except hardware.

You can do the HP Recovery or get a better system (no HP bloatware) by following this tutorial:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219487-clean-reinstall-factory-oem-windows-7-a.html

There are some caveats though, so read the tutorial and ask any questions before you begin.

The choice to re-install or continue trouble shooting is your call. It is often the quickest way to resolve an issue. Members will assist you either way.

re: Windows install. You can reinstall Windows as many times as you like on the same machine.

Well, I apparently found the problem with Steam and such. It was because the AMD driver was disabled and I found this out by reinstalling it which fixed the issue. I guess I don't have to reinstall Windows to deal with this issue.

Excellent troubleshooting and thanks for posting your resolution.

Just so I'm clear and to help anyone with a similar issue looking at your thread, which did you reinstall?
I suspect it was the AMD driver, but it could have been steam.

Thanks,

Bill
.

Why the driver of course. I reinstalled Steam many times while the problem was occurring, but it didn't work. Nor did restarting.
