I know some, if not all of you saw the title of this thread and groaned, because if my extensive google search is any indication, this question gets asked a LOT. Even then though, I've had this problem for a few days and nothing has seemed to work. Stereo mix is my default device, the levels are fine...I'm legitimately at a loss here.

I was recently on an unexpectedly bumpy plane flight with my laptop...could something be broken internally as a result?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I doubt that the bumpy plane ride caused any problems. Uninstall your sound device in the Device Manager (do not uninstall the drivers) then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will reinstall the sound. If there was a status corruption this usually fixes it. The next step if that does not work would be to install your PC vendor's sound driver (don't use the generic driver that Windows may install).
