Stopping W7's RAM Cache?

I'm doing some audio work, editing drums, which involves taking a few audio files (7 or 8) and splitting them into hundreds, one for each drum beat.

My problem is that when I do this, my computer completely locks up. I've noticed that as soon as I do this, W7's RAM Cache jumps up to 1.7gb. And I've only got 2gb of RAM, so it leaves only 300mb for my audio program to run, and I think this is the problem.

Is there a way to temporarily or permanently disable Windows 7's ability to cache your RAM? Because it doesn't seem to be disabling when I want it to.

I'm running the Windows 7 RC Build 7100 atm, with an Intel Core2Duo (2ghz) and 2GB of ram.

Assuming you're referring to Superfetch, it can be disabled by stopping the "SysMain" service from an elevated CMD prompt (NET STOP SYSMAIN), or from the services.msc snap-in.

However, I really doubt that superfetch is the cause of your lockup symptom. You might want to test what happens when you temporarily uninstall the anti-virus utility, if any.

If you do that kind of work, you need as much RAM as possible - check your mobo for how much it can handle and of what type. 2GB is not anymore.

Thanks, I tried that and it seems to have fixed the problem. Now all RAM is routed to my DAW. Its still quite slow, but its usable. I'll look into getting more RAM and a 7200rpm drive instead of 5400 which is what I've got now.
