Strange Start Menu Shortcut Occurences

I have noticed some shortcuts being created as white paper icons and they don't do anything when clicking on them. (Start -> All programs at the bottom -> Apple Software Update (as an example) To fix this problem, I have had to fiddle with the permissions (like you would have to do to access the System Volume Information folder).

And some start menu entries to some programs show up empty (programs like Itunes, Quicktime, Skype)

Hello Mike,

That is strange. If you created a new shortcut in the Start Menu for it directly using the program's exe file, do you still have the same issue?

Well, at least you have a couple of options if it should happen again.

How do I fix this to keep it from happening? Is there a way to reset file permissions to default?

I'm sorry to hear it's happening again.

As a test, create a new administrator account for yourself to see if it still does this in the new account. If not, then you could use the new account instead, copy what you want (ex: files and shortcuts) from the old account, then delete the old account while logged in the new one.

If this works for you, then it would be a lot easier than trying to trace down and correct unknown permission issues.
