Solved Strange USB device issue

Hi Guys,

I will reply to the above in sequence.

maxseven - I downloaded and ran DriveCleanUp taking the option to remove, but no change to the issue.

pooch - I created an elevated CMD window and entered the commands as you said. The safely Remove Hardware window appeared and contained the USB memory stick I had plugged in. However when I tried to stop it and other hardware I tried I received a message saying "The XXX USB Device is not removable and cannot be ejected or unplugged"

Britton30 - I checked the UPnP Device Host and it was started but designated Manual, so I changed it to Automatic.

Unfortunately still no change. After each of the above I rebooted the system.

Regards
Mervyn

If you have a corded PS2 mouse, you could try removing all USB drivers and rebooting to see if Windows will find a new/better driver. I know you did this before. Other than this I suggest post #14. :(

I am now thinking, as you suggest, the only option is to do a re-install. I will carry out a repair install first and if all else fails start again from scratch! (Oh bliss lol).

Thanks again for trying to resolve this.

pooch,

I'm sure that AHCI is not running. That would have involved selecting that as an install option wouldn't it?

That may be the reason why you are having problems, follow the guide posted by Britton and then you can safely select AHCI in the BIOS

The only thing with regard to the AHCI is that this system has been running unchanged for over 3 years and I only had this issue with the USB device recognition for the last couple of weeks, something must have changed but I'm sure I don't know what.

I will carry out a repair install over this week and report back how it goes.

Mervyn

Just make backups of your data first and set your AHCI on in BIOS if you have not done so. A repair install is fairly straight-forward and easy.

Just a quick update after carrying out a Repair Install of Windows 7.

Whatever the issue was has disappeared with the repair, the USB devices are recognised properly and can now be safely removed, so that is all good :D

Having carried out the 100+ Windows updates the system is stable and speed is definitely better, this was something I hadn't noticed had degraded.

The tutorial for the Repair Install warned that graphics drivers may have to be reinstalled and I found out that my nVidia 7900GTX cards would not use drivers above 260.99 if I tried the later ones I suffered serious graphic corruption and couldn't even open jpg files without causing the drivers to crash. Once I have downgraded to the above though all was well.

Many thanks to Britton30 and pooch for guiding me through this process and pointing me in the right direction.

Regards
Mervyn

You are welcome! Yes, nVIDIA drivers are a bit silly, I'm using an older one myself, 270.61.

I had an identical problem with the ... apearing instead of the Eject option. Method two from this page solved it. Device Manager empty or blank in Windows? The bit that says Reset permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects solved it for me.
