I just sent him one for you though.

I'm having the same issue as described in this thread and I'm using a GTX 770 Card and I get the exact same thing happening as displayed in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rwy39mids2Y

Is there any fix for this? I notice that as already mention it does not appear when Aero is turned off though I have other screen tearing issues when resizing or moving windows when I have it off

Edit: I might have found something that works. I went into the Nvidia Control panel and changed the energy saving function to use maximum. Going to see a few days if this fixes it, hopefully it could work for other people.

Hi all,

i know this is an old thread and all, but i started it and i started googling this problem again after installing my new hardware. ANd i bumped into this thread again LOL
Recently bough a new motherboard, CPU, memory and the problem is still present lol.

New hardware..
Intel skylake 6700k
16gb of corsair savage memory
Asus ranger VIII z170
Nvidia GTX 970 Gaming 4G

I still have to replace the screen and the ssd, i hope one of them will be the source of this problem.
I just spend 900€ for nothing..well not for nothing, its obviously faster and all, but still tearing in context menu's, steam, some elements of the windows 10 UI like other context menu's for icons on the task-bar, the info bubble also tears from time to time. And not only when using you-tube. It's really annoying!

Microsoft just lets u run in circles and points u to useless websites etc..tell u to reinstall, even when i tell them i already did ALL of that. Some people send u google pages, but believe me, i googled for weeks maybe even months before i posted here!
There's almost NO other post's on the internet about this problem. But i am clearly not the only one, and it's not limited to a particular GPU or windows version! I usually am pretty good at troubleshooting my pc-probs, heck i even installed computers for a living for some years, i'm no noob. But this problem has beaten me now for almost a year.

This is what it looks like when hovering over menu's in Google Chrome for example!
2mniwj6.jpg

ANY help would be greatly appreciated!

Have a nice day ;)

Some thoughts:

  • Are you staying with the GTX 770 Graphics Card; What drivers do you have installed for it, the v320.18 drivers? There are newer ones (click on start search), but it can be time consuming to try them all. Not sure, but sometimes an older driver may work.

  • Have you preformed a Furmark test? Clicking on the download link takes you to a Geeks3D page where you can download the program, a virustotal scan gave the download a 0/53 detection ratio this stress test can tell you if your card is okay, my main concern is the memory on the GPU, but look it over it may have cracked/cold/loose solder joints. By the way, custom build? How's the paste under the CPU, anything running hot?

  • I looked into whether or not AMD CPUs and Gforce cards were compatible and there were mixed reviews, some say you shouldn't and Gforce runs better if you have an Intel CPU, some say it doesn't matter, I also looked for compatibility between those two and your gigabyte MB and there were mixed reviews there too. The only way you could tell is if you had a supply of MBs, CPUs, and GPUs to rotate out to test, but that can get expensive $$ $$ unless you have a friend that can loan you some.

Related:

  • You should have enough information between the Furmark site and Boozad's tutorial to determine if your having problems with the GTX. Boozad's download link takes you to majorgeeks if you're more comfortable with that.

  • I don't know what's up with the furmark site saying the download is v1.15.1 and the geeks3d is 1.17.0, but I've seen other sites with 1.17.0 so I imagine its okay, the majorgeeks is 1.17.0.0 and virus total is still at 0/53 for majorgeeks.

OK..i edited my previous post!
My BAD! I forgot to mention i also bought a new GPU a couple months ago -> Nvidia MSI GTX 970 Gzming 4G

My temps ° are all good.
The new hardware is running nice and cool.
It has to be a faulty SSD -> PSU or my screen.
But when i connect the pc to the TV, it's still there.
That kinda rules out the screen imo. I could try to get a new DVI cable...then again, when using a HDMI cable on the tv it doesn't help. So probably not the cable

Next purchase is gonna be a PSU + SSD + fresh install of Windows 10 - wish me luck lol :geek:

Hi,

Threads do get old but they never die, don't be afraid to update your thread with new info. Oh, and don't bump to hard; They kinda frown on that here.

General Rules:
2) No useless posts, e.g., thread bumping, useless one liners, junk posting to increase post count, and identical multi-postings in different forums.

~
Without going over the previous postings, are you running all the new stuff at their defaults, including BIOS and MB?

Can you get a reliable PSU?

Where does the OS reside? Can you disconnect the other drive to test?

Do you have any onboard Intel graphics? Isolate then test the 970. Try removing the 970 drivers, then see if they'll re-install under Vista or XP compatibility. If they do, test.

Can you de-tune the corsair memory to lower speed settings? Then test. I'm thinking your main memory and the 4G on the 970 are fighting with each other causing the tearing. I haven't checked if it can be done with the 970's memory.

But when i connect the pc to the TV, it's still there.
To me that means whatever's causing this is originating from the pc.
That kinda rules out the screen imo. I could try to get a new DVI cable...then again, when using a HDMI cable on the tv it doesn't help. So probably not the cable
You won't know about the DVI cable until you try a good one, but probably not.

I have other ideas but that's enough for now.

Hi Anak,

Thx for the reply! As i stated in previous post, all hardware is replaced. Problem still there!
It's an Nvidia problem i'm sure. When i uninstall nvidia drivers with DDU (it prevents the install of the windows 10 GPU drivers.)
And the result is that Chrome reacts normally, no vertical tearing but insane horizontal tearing. Which is normal without the GPu drivers i guess.
Also in Safe mode, the "vertical screen tearing" is gone! Install any drivers and the problem is back.

So basically, it's Nvidia! There are a couple threads in existence that explain the exact same problem, but never ever did i see any solution or a reaction from Nvidia. it's hopeless.

On a side-note ->I can recreate this problem on brand new Pc's at multimedia stores so .. there ya go!
Still got some small bit of hope left some tweaker somewhere figured it out.

I'll keep the bumping to a minimum thx for the warning.

I have seen 1 person who had figured out how to get it working with older drivers. But that's not an option for me. I play newer games, i need the newer drivers + i can't find the drivers he was referring 2.

Edit* I found out that when i'm in safe mode the problem of "vertical tearing" isn't present.
Also i noticed that there is no lag when hovering over menu items (like start + right-click start) when the drivers are active there is a noticeable lag when hovering over menu items. All this is gone when in safe mode OR when in normal mode but without the Nvidia Drivers. I tried a bunch of older driver, but no luck so far.

Man this is driving me nuts!

I made a small video showing the issue (play at halve speed to see it more clearly)

Vertical screen tearing in Start menu (right click) + black background when closing Chrome browser - YouTube

Hi PuffTheMagicBelgian, you're welcome.

Let's take a few steps back, relax and try to get a fresh perspective of the problem. Try to forget anything you've done previously.

The basic definition of tearing, note underlined section:
Screen tearing is a visual artifact in video display where a display device shows information from multiple frames in a single screen draw. The artifact occurs when the video feed to the device is not in sync with the display's refresh rate.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screen_tearing
This would indicate the problem lies between the PC, the 970, and the monitor, with not only the refresh rate but also resolution.

In no particular order:

  • How old is the monitor, can it handle the 970's output? (see next)

  • Have you documented that the refresh rates and resolutions (RRR) of the monitor can handle the RRR output of the 970? Can you find any settings that match?

  • Go through and test the different themes that windows offers, this link suggests that classic is the worst, and in the same thread to lower your display resolution.

  • No tearing in safe mode could indicate a problem with aero, this link is for multiple monitors but could offer insight. It suggests aero should be on.

  • If you can re-create the problem at the big-box stores can you reverse engineer your steps to stop the tearing on your set-up?

  • There are some videos on the related link below to stop nvidia products from tearing, but I imagine you've either tried or discounted them.

Hi Anak,

Thx again for the suggestions.
i'm using Windows10, i should change that in my profile!
So no Aero options for me.

Today i went to a friend, took my card out, put his in, used DDU to uninstall drivers and turn pc off for installing a new GPU. Same result! lol Unbelievable.
Now the other thing, i could reproduce some of my glitches on HIS pc!!
Also running Windows 10 + Nvidia card (GTX 1070)
Then last week when i was in multimedia store, one of those pc's had same problem. So i can reproduce this problem on multiple pc's now! All using Windows 10 + Nvidia GPU.

I'm awaiting response from Nvidia, after talking to them for a good hour and sending them details, examples and the link to different places where this is being discussed.

Small update ..

I have contacted Nvidia, Microsoft and the retailer where i bought all my pc components. I showed them a couple examples of the problem, gave them the links to all online discussions i could find concerning "vertical tearing/splitting".

Nvidia bumped me up to LVL2 support.

"Hello PuffPuffPass,

Your case is being escalated to our Level 2 Technical Support group for further attention. The Level 2 agents will review the case notes to troubleshoot the issue and find a solution or workaround.

As this process may take some time and require a good deal of testing and research, we ask that you be patient. A Level 2 tech will contact you as soon they can to assist or point you in the right direction.

Best Regards,
NVIDIA Customer Care

Microsoft made me run in circles around myself.

And the peak of (horrible support) was telling me that i needed to purchase a "support package" for additional help with my particular issue. They offered me a 85€ package for 1 month, or the full year package for 125€. I actually laughed out load after reading this! I recently bought this version of Windows 10 for 125€ LOL!

Needless to say, i didn't go for that option. And thanked the person for his/her/it's "help".

My retailer (http://www.alternate.be)

These people are the best! Very understanding, helpful etc.
Sadly though, clueless when it comes to this particular issue.
And the hardware has been replaced, so they don't know where to go from here ..

I will report back with new findings!
Greetings, and PuffPuffPass
