I have an idea, and thought I would throw it out there to see what the masses (mainly you geeks here on the Forums) might feel about it:
Now there are Premium movie channels out there in the wild (cable and disk); they are HBO, Showtime, and Starz, etc. You have to pay to view these channels, and the cost per month can be quite high—somewhere around $19.95 to $29.95 a month for each service (these figures may be a bit conservative). Thus, the monthly rate can be a little expensive to enjoy maybe a couple new movies a month.
Now if you go out and buy a new Xbox you can get a subscription to Netflix, and for a small dollar amount you can get movies streamed to your TV. Also, if you have a computer with Vista (probably with Win 7 upon final release) you can get Netflix streamed through Windows Media Center, and again for a small dollar amount.
I do not have any of the Premium movie channels because it just doesn’t make sense paying the amount of money they are asking for. Why pay when for approximately $20.00 a month through Netflix I can get three movies at a time, and that is with unlimited amount during the month.
Now here is the idea: Companies like Netflix and Blockbuster could get with the Cable and Disk companies and set up a channel that would stream these type of movies through providers into the home just like the Xbox or a computer running Windows Media Center, or other Media Center applications. Then they give the watcher the same choices you would get with a subscription to one of the online movie providers, thus allowing the user to watch any movie they want at anytime. The good thing about this is if you come home from “whatever” you can go to one of these channels pick a movie then sit back and enjoy.
There would have to be the ability to communicate with a provider over the internet, and this could be done through the cable/disk box just has it is done with either an Xbox or a Computer.
Now if this is already happening I haven’t heard about, and that would be because out here in “Hooterville” news travels really slow (mule). What are you thoughts?
