Stuck at checking for updates

My dad's computer is a Dell Inspiron E1505, it's been stuck at checking for updates for about 2 hours. I did the bat files listed on the tutorials page but no luck. I installed a tool called Readiness tool by Microsoft, and it got stuck on the installing part, I ran it for an hour. My dad's computer is a Windows 7 Ultimate x32 bit, help?

Hi Cris1,

I don't believe that there is any issue with your dad's computer. The issue is with Microsoft and Windows 7. I have seen it take up to 24 hours to complete checking for updates. One of the gentlemen on this site explained that Windows 7 is now in extended support (meaning Microsoft isn't supplying the resources to it like they did when they fully supported). They want everyone to upgrade to Windows 10. I am not an expert by any means, but a couple of the guys who are experts are the ones who could explain it more thoroughly (if need be). Your updates will come, it just will take much longer that it used too. hope this helps.

Do you think connecting an Ethernet cable to the laptop would help?

Being hard-wired (using an Ethernet cable) is definitely faster than wireless. I am not sure if it would help in this issue, but I would try it anyway.

I had that problem as well. It was showing, "Checking for Updates" & the progress was still showing 0%, which went for ages. I cancelled the Update & shut down the computer as I had an urgent appointment to attend, & during the shut down it installed all 10 updates. So they had in fact been downloaded but there was no indication that had occurred.

It seems there are problems with the MS server or something.

I am seeing this here now too. Been sitting at downloading updates for at least 20 minutes....

I am having the same issue on windows 7. Can't install stand-alone update either unless it is an .exe file. Maybe someone will get it fixed soon.

Whatever the problem with MS and Win 7 updates seems to continue. Both my Win 7 computers are acting wonky when it comes to updates. On one it wouldn't download the updates, after a few "try agains" it did install the updates related to Office. But then it said there were no other updates even though there should have been all the important and optional updates that I didn't install. Made the mistake of checking for updates and got stuck in that quagmire. Other Win 7 computer having similar problems. I'm going to wait a day or two and try again.
