Suggestions for a free PDF Reader ?

I'm looking for a free PDF Reader.
I've been using Foxit for years and looking for something different.
I'm test driving Nitro Reader and so far it seems pretty good.
Anyone know of any problems with Nitro Reader, or know of a better free Reader I can try?

Oops, I only read your title first. I couldn't find anything free on the Nitro site, they wanted personal info for a "free" trial.

If an email address gets spammed, can always get another free one.

I have been using Nitro PDF Reader for a few years. It installs a printer driver so any file can be "printed" to a PDF format. Also has an add-on for Firefox.

I don't want to hijack/sidetrack that thread, so I'll post here...

I've been a long time user and recommended Foxit to friends and family I help.
With the latest Foxit release, I'm seeing issues and questioning if I should use or reccomend it.
That's why I'm testing other options such as Nitro.

Issues with Foxit latest version released a few days ago:
1) It installs "Foxit Cloud" and uninstalling that in Programs and Features has problems.
2) The installer now includes a PUP Open Candy dll.
MBAM Pro blocked this dll for me, but others have not been as lucky and had problems ...

If anyone wants more info of my experience let me know!

I've been using free Nitro PDF reader with no problems on win 7 x64, just give them a yahoo email address if your worried about it.. I gave them my own and haven't received any spam.

I was aware of Foxit Cloud and so far have had no issues with it and have left it. There is a thread (somewhere) discussing Open Candy. It's not malicious but offers developers' software to the user during installing. Still not something I want, but I did use ADWcleaner to get rid of it. All seems well here. Open Candy may also serve ads for software based on users' browsing or installed programs, I'm not sure though.

I know others will disagree, but I have been using the Adobe reader again since version X, (now XI) (used Foxit before) and have had no issues as in the past. I do wish it had tabbed views though.

Nitro PDF

Hi,

I used Foxit Reader for a long time but switched to Nitro PDF some time ago. I signed up using a disposable email address so that I could download it.

It does install a service that I keep set to disabled. Never had a problem with it.



Preferences are configured as shown in the following screenshot and also javascript is disabled (it's the setting below "internet access").



Nitro PDF does connect to the internet to send usage statistics and this is blocked by my firewall. I had to set it up to block connection manually.

I check for Nitro PDF program updates manually also.

It's not configured to display PDF content in my browser(s). Mostly I use the Cyberfox built in PDF viewer for online PDF viewing.

I was aware of Foxit Cloud and so far have had no issues with it and have left it.

It seems some people are having issues the Foxit Cloud in the latest version.

I used Nuance at one time I haven't re-downloaded it though because I don't use or view pdf's much anymore but didn't have any issues with it before ?

I'm using Sumatra Portable one. It has very less print of about 8-14 MB when reading a 115 pages book. I guess it's a small one, ain't it?

Totally agree with you. The original and official Adobe Reader is the only thing you need, and since it's official and not a third party clone, it's has the best feature support we can get, and for free of course.

The only "crapware" it installs is a service that is used for automatic updates, which can be safely disabled (at the cost of need to update manually when needed) or easily blocked by firewalls to prevent it to phone home.

Adobe is a great reader, it's just so bloated...and big and uses much more resources than Foxit, Sumatra, and others.
