Supermium problem

I was reading various posts about browsers in W7 and was reminded that I have not been able to "update" Supermiun since I installed it last year. It seems you have to go for a new install and then it downloads the latest version (I think). So I followed a link to Github where I downloaded it. When I tried to install it MSE kicked in and quarantined part of it. Unable to carry on I get the message "error. Win32 error code is 0". I gave up and tried to open Supermium that I have been using and it won't open. I have exported my bookmarks to a safe place. How can I get Supermium again, from a safe source to try a new install?

I tried a download from another site and get pretty much the same result. It won't complete the install. I looked up the error code and "0" seems to indicate the installation was completed successfully. What on earth is going on? Its enough to drive me to Linux!

I don't use MSE so can't make a guess as to why there's a conflict. But FWIW, I'll mention that I use Supermium Portable; I never install a program if there's a portable version I can use instead.

FTR, the portable version does not auto-update, either . . . but that's the way I like it. My habit is to disable auto-updating on everything I can because I'm too old to continually put up with the glitches, failures, and problems new versions always seem to bring (of anything, not just Supermium). I'll deal with the hassle on my own terms, at less frequent intervals more acceptable to me and my increasingly limited time. After all, that's why I'm sticking with a stable Win 7 instead of the X*show Win 10-11 have become.

I update Supermium about twice a year (about every 6 versions). I download the portable, extract to a folder, and put that folder somewhere on my system (in my case, I put it in a D:\PortableApps folder) and put a shortcut to it in my Start Menu. After about 6 months I'll download a newer version, dump the contents of the old folder and replace it with the contents extracted from the new download. No install/uninstall required, and the update schedule is on my terms, not the software vendor.

Another advantage of my strategy is I have a chance to make sure I've transferred everything I want (bookmarks, extensions) and the new folder works properly without any glitches before I dump the old folder. Auto-updating doesn't give you that option.

Can you please explain how to do that. I looked for MSE and found a box that offers no option to temporarily turn it OFF. Only the options to update, check history, or do scans.

I have noticed there are people who often look for a Portable version of software they want to try. I had no idea why. Thanks for your suggestion. If I can get past the MSE brick wall I might have a go with your method if it is not too difficult and time comsuming to open the browser when I want to use it.

I'm not having much luck shutting down MSE but did stop it working in "real time"(?). I got Supermium to attempt an install but MSE gave me the Red Alert and listed it as some sort of Trojan. I managed to get it to ignore the Trojan and it supposedly announced the installation was successful. However, it did not appear on the programs list or appear on the desktop as a link. ie., no way to open the browser. I have tried various sources and versions and they all get flagged up as harmful. In fact four different names for the same Trojan.

Trying to keep a couple of functional browsers working with W7 is a real challenge. I have had very little luck setting up Linux Mint on another PC as a backup, but other than a Firefox install I can't get anything else actually working. Just call me befuddled.

It must be some sort of other setting on your computer. I have many browsers working on my computer. Pale Moon, FF 115ESR, r3dfox, Supermium, Thorium, Ungoogled Chromium 109, and a few more.

IIRC Supermium didn't make any shortcuts for me but... you can just find the .exe it installed, wherever you told it to install, and run it from there, or make a shortcut from that and put it wherever you want, including your Start menu items.
