I've had the Portable version of Supermium for a year now. Once it is open and running it's fine but it takes about 5 minutes to open initially. It's been like this since the start so I doubt whether a newer version would make a difference. I have tried to update it but the 'check for updates' feature is not in the usual 'about' place. I am considering switching to the installed version to see if that is quicker, particularly now there seems to be a de-googled version available but I just wondered if anyone else has experienced this slow start (I have seen references to it on other forums). My other (Brave) browser opens pretty instantly. I tried to find the de-accelerate hardware option but there doesn't appear to be one.

It's portable. You can download the new version and test it out for comparison, while still keeping what you currently have just in case.

Download the installer for the new version from the SourceForge website. When you launch the installer and it asks for a location to which to extract everything, select "Desktop". It will finish with a folder for the new version on your desktop. Open the folder and launch the new version.

If the new version still takes 5 minutes to load, then the Supermium version is not the problem and you've got a conflict somewhere else that you'll need to investigate.

If the new version loads quickly, then your old version has probably been corrupted somewhere along the way. In that case, simply delete the folder with your old version in it and start using the new folder. If you're keeping it, move the new folder from your desktop to someplace more appropriate and for easier access, create a shortcut to the launcher in that folder.

Great thank you that worked a treat. It's super fast. What I would like to do next is to delete Brave and get a second browser that supports Windows 7 in the same way Supermium does. I wouldn't mind another portable as long as it doesn't conflict with Supermium. Would you have any suggestions?

It's a shame Brave discontinued support for Win7. I really liked the privacy changes they made to the Chromium base. I don't see any other browser with Win7 support that goes as far as Brave did.

For what purpose do you want a second browser? In my experience, that's desirable because I find there are some websites that Chromium browsers just don't necessarily work with smoothly. Supermium is Chromium-based so rather than choosing another Chromium browser, I find a Firefox-based browser is more practical as an alternative to Supermium.

I can highly recommend r3dfox (links in the related thread). Firefox 115 ESR (as long as they continue Win7 support) is also worthy of mention, though you'll need Ray's User-Agent extension to keep nanny websites off your back.

I used to have lots of different browsers on my system, but I've pared that back and now use only Supermium portable and r3dfox portable.

I agree I really liked Brave and was sorry to have discovered it so late in the day. it must have awesome in its prime. I think it is better to have two browsers just in case one develops a fault, you can search for solution and download anything with the other.

I've downloaded the redfox one and that seems quicker than Supermium but I'll stick with that one as I have all my bookmarks set up. Thank you for your help. Windows Seven lives on!

I am having a minor issue with Supermium. I am using Duckduckgo which is one of the available search engines but when I open Supermium, a tab opens but just spins round and round and never opens. If I open a second tab and close the first one, everything is OK from thereon but is there a setting I need to change to get Duckduckgo to successfully open a tab when first launched?
