SVCHOST.EXE effect on performance

Task Manager shows "mucho many" SVCHOST.EXE active processes. Does each one result from an active "service" ? If so: (1) could this result in poor performance (2) which services can safely be disabled ? Thanx.

How much is "mucho many"?
On my Lenovo 3000 N100 from 2006, Windows 7 Ultimate, 2GB RAM, working in Net with r3dfox browser,
there are active 13 svchost.exe processes > 6 for SYSTEM, 5 for LOCAL SERVICE, 2 for NETWORK SERVICE.

Eating not so much memory though - two biggest services for SYSTEM 32 980 KB and 11 452 KB, others less,
total about 80MB RAM in use. I am afraid that there will be some serious failures in work of your PC, if you
try disable those services.

With working r3dfox browser on sevenforums.com page now the total amount on RAM in use is about 1200 MB from systems available 2 GB - no complaints about laptop work or speed. Total 46 processes in use - data from Windows Task Manager.

A lot of services use svchost. Some stuff will break. I'm not sure if the system will become unstable or not. An expert once upon a time came up with a guide to optimize 7 with different risk levels. He's since removed most of it. The first is the site now. It still has some info. The second is a snapshot from wayback with that guide. As a disclaimer I've never tried this. Do so at your own risk.
