Synaptics PS/2 Port Compatible TouchPad

I did a clean install of win7 (yeah for me!) on my acer aspire 5336-2524. I also downloaded the device driver for Synaptics PS/2 Port Compatible TouchPad, unzipped it, and I think I installed it? I did an auto search for the best driver and result was the best driver was installed.

My problem is this, there used to a function within Personalize > Change Mouse Pointers > then touch pad. Here is where I could stop the function of the scroll bar along the right side of the touch pad and make scroll work with two fingers.

I don't know if that function was part of acer or Synaptics PS/2 Port Compatible TouchPad. But I want it back!

also there is nothing of the original factory install because when I made all the restore and back up it was crap, I found out after I needed it.

All that is there except still nothing for the touch pad. Now a new minor issue is every time I restart the synaptics software asks to be run.

Did you download the driver from the Acer Site?

It shows two, one synaptics and one elantech. (that was the case in a few other threads) Try both of them, one at time.

My downloads were directly from acers driver down loads, I did both even though a check showed synpatics, the Elan won't install, get an error and the synaptics loads.


I noticed the drivers are for 64bit, I did a clean install using the other, the 86, not 64 bit, should i redo my clean install but us the 64 bit Win7 OS?

No, that was my mistake one the driver page. X86 are the correct drivers for you.

I'll look at that in depth tonight, keep in mind when my laptop crashedthe original restore and repair disks I made didn't functions n for what ever reasons. this all started because when I type, the cursor jumps and it starts typing wherever. I think its because I accidently hit the touchpad . before I when the issue happened i was able to adjust the touch pad settings which helped. perhaps synaptic has a better driver than ace??

This from their site stopped me from recommending it.

The Synaptics device driver is customized to meet the specific requirements of your device manufacturer, externally detached or wireless touchpad devices included. To ensure that you get the appropriate device driver for your system, download your Synaptics device driver from your system manufacturer's support website.

It is worth a shot though. Good luck!

Hi there
Why not just download the Generic Synaptics driver based on whether your system is x-64 or x-86. I've found some laptops have a very irritating habit of the cursor jumping all over the place at random making decent data or text entry almost impossible -- however replacing the "Official" driver by the generic synaptics driver invariably cures the problem.

If you've never seen the problem - you are lucky - but if you've had it then it's one of the worst experiences you can ever have with a computer.

The Generic driver also allows you to disable the touch pad as well - great for people like me who even always a mouse with a laptop. It works on almost ALL laptops -- and certainly most ACER ones.

(Works on W8 as well for anybody thinking of installing W8).

The touchpad on your Acer computer may be disabled by pressing a certain key combination. This same key combination also enables the touchpad.

On most Acer notebooks, to disable or enable the touchpad press and hold the Fn key down and press the F6 or F7 key.
