Hello, hope someone can understand this complicated problem, because I don't even know were to put this thread.

I cannot make a regular backup, never been able to establish that. because my CD/DVD driver is not detected, or does not function.

This morning I made a system image that was successful on my Toshiba external hard drive. Then I was asked to make a system repair disc ;

When I put a Blanc CD in my CD player I get this :

This is the next result;

Don't know what to do to fix this, thanks for any help,

Hello Thelma mate have you checked in the Device Manager for any yellow triangles against that optical drive??

My other thought is do you need to get the driver for it and again I am wondering of the drive itself is not up the creek without a paddle.

I`m with John, I would go get a new optical drive if this is a desktop, they are so cheap.

Do any other discs work in it ? A music cd ? A dvd movie ?

Is it a cd/dvd drive ?

Has the drive ever worked ?

Even Blu-Ray drives are cheap now.

Well I just tried a music CD in it. I have never done that,because I always listen to music on my CD payer (I like the sound to be good), but I remember a friend sometimes playing music on this laptop.

I don't hair any sound, but I know the CD is turning in the player right now.

Perhaps I got the settings wrong somehow ?

No yellow signs in the Device Manager.

So you both think it's hardware not software ?

Does it sound like it`s reading it or does it sound like it`s trying to read it ?

Do you have speakers connected ?

Is the volume up ?

I think I see the problem, you put a George Michael cd in and your computer has rebelled

See my system specs, it's a DELL Laptop, I can perfectly well listen to music on Y Tube by the way, load and clear, but only with external speakers plugged in.

Youtube has nothing to do with your cd player, but at least we know your speakers work.

Hi, Back home,

Yes I waited with this problem because I was not sure first;

If it is a software problem to do with my backup system ( I am also terrible in settings in general) or hardware?

I have lots of restore points in System restore ( works fine) and CCleaner, but I could never ever do a backup CD. So now I have finally done a system image this morning, just with windows create a system image on a Toshiba external Hard drive.

So at least now, if something goes drastically wrong I can reinstall ( I think ).

I have just now tried Windows Media Player again, whit my external speakers plugged in and I can hear George loud and clear, So it is not Mr G. Micheal that is the problem.

Also in Media Player there are an enormous amount of settings I have no clue what they mean.

Then I have in Event viewer this yellow triangle error

Ok, last one I found lately:

You are not trying to create a backup cd, you are trying to create a system repair disc.

It`s not vital that you make one today, however one is needed if you ever want to use that image you created.

You can always make one on another Windows 7 PC, as long as it`s the same service pack and bit version (32 or 64 bit)

You can always try again here, but you`ve got to figure out what`s up with your cd burner.

Yes, that's it a system repair disk, really important, don't have one.

In the event log under hardware it states 0 ( Non ? )
so that's good

Just a thought Thelma if the player is showing the CD as playing but no sound have you tried updating the sound card on that machine. Sorry I cannot find the driver for it you might have better luck.

If you run HW Info it will tell you exactly what audio device is installed in the machine.

Using HW Info
PART A:
You can test the volts on the PSU with HW Info HWiNFO, HWiNFO32/64 - Download <download the right bit version and close the right hand window select Sensorsand scroll down to the power section where you will see what the volts aredoing see my pic. Now the section you want will be labelled - fpr example Asusboards usually have "Nuvoton" and Gigabyte boards "ITE" inany case the section you want will have Vbatt or VBAT in it (dead give away)
The original right hand window shows the machine running and is handy for thatbut for looking at the components in some detail close it and use the main lefthand side panel
FOR OTHER COMPONENTS
PART B:
Open each small square with + in it on the section the components are in andthen click on the individual component/s (it will highlight in blue) - in theright hand side will appear all sorts of details including brands speeds andother essential info that particular device. See pic for example.

Ok Thelma mate I need that PART B: done as you have run PART A: but no matter it showed up your machine's battery as looking as if it needs renewing as the volts are under required volts and the capacity is rather sad - see pic

What you need to do is close those original readouts go the left hand section pick out the audio section and open it out as per my pic
