System hangs or freezes never leaving a dump file

When either left by itself downloading files over an extended period or a small amount of time playing games 20 seconds to 4 minutes the screen will go either blue or blank with no system message.

Though I've unchecked the auto restart and told it to make minidump files, and recreated the crash over 50 times, I've not gotten a single dump file. I've tried everything to get a response after the crash but my only option is to hard reset.

I've used the diagnostic tool that another user has added on the forum and compiled what information my computer has. This is the first use of this pc. I've fresh installed Windows 7 4 times and updated all drivers to current as far as I know. I have also done the memory test by the iso cd provided multiple times for the 5 cycles that is posted. I've done disk scans virus scans etc all come back with no problems or errors. These of course are according to my observations.

Thanks in advance to anyone trying to help.

Incredibly frustrated user,
Klimek

Next time it happens if you can open task manager, right click the frozen process and click on create memory DMP. that way we will have the info we need to diagnose.

Let us know if you need help

It's not a frozen process or if it is it's SUPER FROZEN. The computer locks up. Nothing responds num lock caps lock mouse. Nothing of the OS screen is visible. If it was just a single process I would have a dump via that method already, I apologize for not clarifying this further. I will be either using a full screen application in which case the screen goes blank and I am unable to start the task manager via shortcut ctrl+shift+esc or invoke a response with any other keyboard function or key. My only option is to press the reset button on my tower; hard reset. If there is something else I should be activating or some program I can run while I recreate the crash just point me to it.

Thanks.

I've installed a couple of hot fixes and it doesn't seem to be locking up while I leave it idle anymore.

It still locks up when I play games.

this last time it locked up with a pin stripe screen, vertical bars. I could not get any reaction from the system and had to again hard reset. I waited quite awhile hoping it would make a .dmp but alas it didn't.

Is there some kind of logger I can run so that it is forced to make it?

Klimek,

Just to make sure, could you:

  1. WIN + Pause/Break key
  2. Advanced System Settings in the left-hand task pane
  3. Settings button in the Startup and Recovery section
  4. In the System Failure section,
    1. checkmark "Write an event to the system log"
    2. checkmark "Automatically restart"
    3. Under "Write debugging information", choose Small Memory Dump
  5. OK button your way out.

You will have noticed that by using the Event Viewer (EventVwr.msc) you will hopefully find an entry in the System Log which will be informative.

Oh yes WIN denotes that key with the funny looking wavy flag on it.

I have done that. I have tried with automatic restart on and off. It is selected to use mini dump and to send it to C:\windows\minidump and it has been as I've read as much as possible to help everyone be able to help me.

The weird thing is whether auto restart or not the computer does not restart it just freezes completely and I'm unable to get out of a bad screen without hitting the reset button. I don't think the computer is actual able to function enough to even get to the point where it could create a dump file for the error.

I've got it to completely stop freezing from idling. It only freezes during applications. It always has Kernal power event code 41 at the time of freeze. Or that's what is left in the log after I'm forced to reboot by using power button reset.

It seems like a lot of people are having the same problem and none have been resolved. Is there anyone that has had the problem and resolved it? What was your solution?

I've got the newest drivers for all devices. All system updates. Newest Bios version. I've fresh installed Win 7 on formated HDD a bunch. I'm going for a PSU replacement next. Any suggestions and experience with the same problem from anyone would be helpful thanks.

Klimek,
I suppose you've already seen this but I did find:
First of all, remove all unnecessary hardware devices from the computer, try entering Windows safe mode to test whether it is a third-party software/hardware compatibility issue. If so, please download and run Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to check the reason for the issue. If the issue is caused by some incompatible driver, you might go to Device Manager, right click your hardware device in the list and select Update Driver Software; then click Search automatically for updated driver software.

Otherwise, you might want to google "kernel power event id 41 windows 7"

Do a search of posts mentioning Verifier.exe. If I've not misspelled the name then an expert regarding use of this program, and bsods, is J.C. Griffith.

I'm currently playing with verifier but I'm a real beginner with using this program, thus can be of no assistance.

I just moved out my video card, which I just received back from xfxforce RMA, to my working PC. When I tried the crash inducing activities of the gimped pc I also crashed exactly in the same fashion. When I replaced the normal GPU it was back to smooth sailing. Since I have identical GPU, being the 1GB Radeon 5770 with identical drivers it's safe to say that my problem is the GPU.

I AM SO UPSET THAT THEY WOULD SEND A COMPLETED RMA BACK THAT IS STILL DEFECTIVE IN SOME FORM!! I just assumed that if they sent it back to me that they would 'obviously' make sure that it passes all kinds of quality checks, right? I have learned yet again what happens when one 'assumes'. *SIGH*

Thanks to anyone that has offered any advice. To anyone that has similar crashes that happen in the way I've described, with a visual screen not that of a 'BSOD' and leaving you with no dump files and forcing you to hard reset or power off I would suggest isolating the GPU in a known working system, preferably with a known working identical GPU.

Now I need to hope that xfx will give me a break on something since I've already paid to ship to RMA once. I just want a damned working GPU!!

This is because the memory dumping is not working. I have same problem. And there is a file in C:\Windows\System32\ntroskrnl.exe . In ma laptop it is 32bit compatible, but i installed 64bit windows7 . and we need to install the atleast version 6.1.7600.20618 of this kernal dump file . It is a 5.5mb file.

I tried to download,but can't do it.

Anyone please download and post it here and help all of us.
This problem comes for 64bit AMD processor used pc's mainly

The more details is given at
Error message on a blue screen on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2: "STOP: 0x0000000A"
