Solved System Restore Fails (Windows 7 (x64))

Hello

While waiting for your reply I tried to do a System Restore and received the following error message:

System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.

Details:
System Restore failed to replace the file (C:\Windows) with its original copy from the restore point.
An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. (0x80071a90)

I have received this error before as well as one stating that my Anti-Virus might be causing it. However, my firewall was not on and the Restore was operating in a "clean boot" environment with no "start-up" items running and only basic services running (which include the Shadow Copy Service). I also get the same results while running in normal mode (with all startup items running).

Have you every seen this before?

If you try with a clean boot it should work
You may encounter temporary connection-related errors when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update to install updates

EDIT: Brink and I answered at the same time. Give his approcach a try and if it does not work try mine. We both seem to think that the cause is some other software that you use.

That is one of the things that I was trying to convey in my previous post:

I was very care to eliminate anything that i could think of that could interfere. The process of creating the Restore Point always says that it was created successfully but over the past month or so I have not been able to actually execute a successful restore. This started shortly after a major Microsoft Update right around Christmas time, best I can remember. prior to that the restores would work even with my ZoneAlarm running.

Double check to make sure that System Protection is turned on for the C: drive?

If it is, then run a SFC /SCANNOW command to see if it may find and fix any bad system files. Afterwards, see if you may be able to create a restore point.

System Protection was turned on. I ran the SFC /SCANNOW command and the results indicated that there were some corrupted system files that it could not correct. The CBS.Log file is quite extensive, over 1999 pages (legal size in landscape layout), and I have no idea what I am looking for or exactly how those defective files ARE marked.

I have found a number that are marked with a [SR] tag but they appear to have been fixed, similar to these entries:

Click on the SFC link above for more details in OPTION THREE on how to read only the SFC entries in the CBS. First, I would recommend to run the SFC scan a few more times to see if it may still be able to fix them. Sometimes it may take running it more than once to fix them.

As you suggested I ran the tools another six or seven times. Then I followi=ed the instructions in KB929833, those results ares shown below:

In KB929833, "How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot the missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7" there are instructions on how to find the non-repairable items found after running the SFC /SCANNOW file and the results contained in the CBS.Log file. What it does not explain is how to handle the following error for example;

After all if it were available in the System File Store the SFC /Scannow would have already repaired it, would it not? So where is the replacement supposed to be found? If a suitable replancement cannot be found then is one supposed to delete the offending file(s) or what???

It appears to be a generic modem driver file included in Windows 7. It shouldn't be related to your system restore point issue though.

If you wanted to fix it, then here's a copy of that mdmomrn3.inf file from my system in a ZIP file below that you can download and save to your desktop. You will need to extract and unblock the file first.

• Afterwards, you will need to take ownership and set permissions to "Allow" your account "Full Control" of the original C:\Windows\inf\mdmomrn3.inf file in your current installation.
• Next, rename the original C:\Windows\inf\mdmomrn3.inf file to say mdmomrn3.inf.bak instead.
• You will now be allowed to replace it with the unblocked copy below.

Folder to save it in afterwards:
C:\Windows\inf

Thanks! What specifically should I be looking for, what would stop SP1 from loading???

I have a number of corrupted gadget files (those furnished by MS with Win7 and even after disabling Gadgets & then reinstalling them, they were still corrupted.

I also have corrupted files where the Source Files are also corrupted like:

What's funny about that is that is the problems with Restore that started this thread. Restore dos not work for me at Boot or any other time. It creates a Restore point, it verifies a valid restore point but it will not complete a RESTORE, period. Which takes us now back to square one.

I have tried everything that I know to diable all third party allicatuins that could possibly run in Windows. I have performed System Restores & SP1 installations in "Clean Boot" & Safe Mode" environments with nothing but basic Windows System Files running and nothing else. Yest both Restore & SP1 operations FAIL.

This is a stubborn one. Do you have anything connected to the computer other than a keyboard, mouse, and monitor? If so, unplug it, create a restore point, and see if you may be able to do a system restore afterwards.

Had the same problem, here is how I solved it. My OS is Windows 7, so here are the steps to do it:
1. go to Start ant type msconfig in the “Search programs and files” box, hit Enter key
2. go to Boot tab and check “Safe boot”, make sure “Minimal” si also checked, hit Apply and then OK. Now restart your computer
After your computer has restarted (it starts in a safe mode actually), do the following:
1. go to Start and type msconfig in the “Search programs and files” box, hit Enter key
2. go to Boot tab and uncheck “Safe boot”
3. go to the Startup tab and disable all startup items by hitting the “Disable all” button
4. go to the Services tab and check “Hide all Microsoft services” then disable all services (besides the Microsoft services) that run on system boot by hitting the “Disable all” button.
5. Hit Apply and then OK. DON’T restart the computer now
6. go to Start ant type services.msc in the “Search programs and files” box, hit Enter key
7. go to “Volume Shadow Copy” service, right click, select Properties, select “Automatic” from the “Startup type” drop-box.
8. Restart your computer
Now you should be good to go for the System Restore.
If you want to undo your last System Restore later on, you will have to follow all the steps again. This is of course normal because, after the System Restore, your system returns to the settings that were saved in that specific restore point that you just restored.
