system restore followed by slow booting

I had to use a restore point yesterday, it did its job and everything looks recovered as it should be. However since the restore my bootup time when the hdd is loading is way longer than it was, even my laptop boots up a lot faster now.

I did do a disk defrag and it had no affect.

Did you install any software that could be affected by the restore or drivers?

Undo the restore point and then go back one or two restore points earlier.

Prior to using the restore point did you follow any of the guides for speeding things up like the shutdown time or one for overall performance in 7? Once you used the restore point you may have gone back before the time any changes were made to the default Windows registry settings.

Hopefully there wasn't any problem with the restore point used. That would be another thing to consider where you may have to use another one to see things back to normal again.

One other thing to add here is always create a new restore point prior to installing any new unfamiliar program as well as the typical advice for most large program installs in the event of a bad install. This way you can recover a normal working Windows.

well booting up suddenly is faster again now, I guess windows reoptimised itself.

It's interesting you brought that up. With more then one RC install previously on here and letting one install sit idle for a lengthy period it would act a bit slow on the first few startup and later improve on it's own after steady usuage. A lot of this has to do with the self maintainence tools included in 7 seen as the PreFetch in XP and later the SuperFetch in Vista.
