I am not sure this is the right forum, but I thought I would start here.

I attempted to restore to a point I created last night. I received a message that the system could not be restored to that point. I also received a warning that my Avast AV 2015 Background Service was not running. The computer was running slow. I ran system restore again to undo the restore point and after the shutdown and restart I received another error message that the system could not be restore to the point I started from. I also received the same Avast warning. It appears the desktop has some icons from last night, as well as some from today.

I suspect the Avast AV may be causing a problem with the system restore, but I am not sure.

I ran sfc /scannow and it did not find any code integrity violations.

I could use some help on how to proceed. Thanks.

Why don't you say what error message was displayed?
Shutdown AVAST or even better.... uninstall it, so it can't interfere in the process

I shutdown Avast and tried again. I received the following error message:

An unspecified error occurred during System Restore (0xc0000022)

I have not had to uninstall the antivirus program in the past to do a system restore.

I ran sfc /scannow prior to the original post. No integrity errors. I have not run chkdsk.

Do you want the sfc /scannow and chdsk run before or after running system restore from advanced boot options?

run chkdsk/f c:
now. Try system restore later in normal mode. After that in recovery mode

Do I to boot into safe mode to access repair your computer->system restore? Will I need a disc and/or password run the repair/restore option?

I ran the chkdsk/f c: and tried restore in normal mode. Still received error message. In addition Avast didn't start.

Also, each instance of trying to restore and Avast not starting has resulted in a restore point titled avast! antivirus restore point.

I think this is related to Avast. I may have no choice but to uninstall Avast to do a system restore.

I uninstalled Avast. System Restore worked fine.

Any suggestions for another free antivirus?

Thanks to Kaktussoft for your assistance.
