I recently ran a Registry cleaner and being a Newbie have done something to my registry.

I cannot systems restore it just says

%systemroot%registration
Destination: ComPlus Staging

Is there anyway to rectify this.

I had been having some problems deleting some pictures so thought I would restore to an earlier date.

The point is now it will not restore at all.

I might add that I am not computer savy so know nothing about systems recovery options.

Thanks

Will I lose all My Microsoft updates - not bothered about anything else.

Many thanks to all your replies - I shall study them today and try to take the plunge.

Hi

I evenutally had my IT man in and he took it back to factory condition and we started all over again.

I believe mine was something I had done in the registry - I ran a Reg cleaner and obviously deleted something I should not have.

I shall leave the registry alone in future.

Cheers

Hi,
I have just installed Windows 7 Ultimate for the 2nd time in two weeks with all my programs. At least I am getting better and more confident each time I do it. The message displayed in this topic is the message I am now getting. From surfing the net it seems that this problem and message is happening a lot with installations of Windows 7, especially Ultimate 64bit.
It is not, however, confined to win7 as this message has been displaying after inability to use System Restore with earlier versions, XP and Vista. It is probably something that goes awry early on when installing programs.
Over the years, it would seem that there is no fix for this problem but a clean reinstallation of Windows is necessary and best to be done on a clean reformatted disk or partition. No shortcuts.
I will be doing this and testing System Restore at various points in the setup of my Windows to see if it occurs after any particular event. As I go along I will be taking an image of the C Drive so I can go back to when everything was working as it should.
I hate to say it but sometimes it is just quicker to start with a clean slate rather than try to repair a problem.
I have noticed that people seem to get bogged down in why someone was using System Restore in the first place. That really doesn't matter. It is a critical component of Windows for quickly fixing a mistake etc.. and should be working and tested out occasionally. I always feel, perhaps incorrectly, that if System Restore is not working it is a sign that all is not well and down the track something bad is likely to happen.
Anyway, I would rather not have to rely on a disk image as sometimes there is some important item that could be lost. System Restore is usually the best option - it has to work!

I did try system restore in safe mode. It worked the first time. Later when I tried system restore again it would not work normally or in safe mode.
