System Restore Points Being Deleted After a Day or so

I have had this problem ever since I installed my Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I did a clean install, and everything is perfect, I haven't had problems with the system, but I think it's good to have restore points for the times when, and if, I need it, so I ask for help till it's not too late.

I googled the problem and saw that it is a very common problem for Windows 7. Nevertheless, I haven't yet found a proper solution for it. The space I am using for storing restore points is, by defaults, 3% of the portion of the hard disk -- 1,5GB.

Increase the allowed space a bit. I think it will work.
You have your system image, shadow copies, and backup and restore points. I think a bit more space is needed.
You can use the software windirstat to see how the space is used.

I just noticed it wasn't after rebooting, I don't know when it happens, but I have only two restore points now and they are after updates I installed an hour ago.

Thanks for the reply. It's 5GB now... I will just wait a day or two since I don't know when the restore points are being deleted.

That is a very small amount of space to reserve for system restore points.

What is the size of the drive on your system?

Some of these super-duper speedup-cleanup your computer programs will delete restore points. If you are using one of those, then cease and desist from such immediately if not sooner.

The portion is 50GB and I have 22GB free, and no, I am not using cleanup programs.

I've got 11 GB set aside for restore points, but I never come close to using it all since when I feel my system is stable AND I've got a fresh system image backup, then I reduce the space to zero, restart, and bring the space backup and create a restore point.

How much space you need or want depends on how far back you think you may need to backup. Since I make frequent system image backups, then really 5 GB is plenty for my needs.

A defrag can potentially delete restore points. Any automatic defrags set?

I've heard of DisKeeper doing that but never the built-in windows defragger or the SysInternals CONTIG program.

I can make the space for restore points even more, and reduce it sometimes to 1-3% so that the most recent won't be deleted. For now, I will try if 5GB are enough. If it doesn't work, I will ask for another suggestion, but it should be something like this, because I didn't have any problems with the installation or the system so far.

How do I make system image backup? If it is the space Windows Setup chooses when you install the Windows, I think I have 100MB.

I am not using programs for defragmentation, nor am I using programs for fixing registry problems. I have been using this PC for two months.

There are two kinds of people: Those who make backups and those who wish they had.

You do NOT put a backup on the very drive you want to backup.

My backups are kept on external USB drives. I would be dead in the water if I didn't make backups.

I'd like to make a backup but it says it could take up to 28GB and I don't have that big flash drive. Mine is only 3,8GB or so. If there's a way I can save only the most important things with which I could restore the system should I ever need to, and it takes 3GB or less, I will make a backup.

External USB drives are NOT the same as external USB sticks.

I have a couple of exteranl usb drives. one is about 150 GB and the other 300 GB. They are small, only need power from the usb port and are both Toshiba external usb drives.

Ah, yeah, I know what you're talking about. Unfortunately I can't afford an external USB drive. When I have money to spend for my PC, I think I will buy a graphics card, so that I will be able to play games in a resolution higher than 1024x768 (low settings).

If my Windows ever fails, I will re-install it. The portion it is installed on has a few programs, drivers, etc. It won't be a big deal to install them again. As to the other portion (415GB), it keeps all my important data, so it's safe there as long as the hard disk itself doesn't fail. However, I have a three-year warranty for the hard disk.

How much Disk Space is apportioned for Restore Points at Computer>Properties>Advanced Options>SysProtection>Configure? I set it around 20% if I have the HD space to spare. You'll then have more points hang around longer.

10%, 5GB... the points from yesterday are still there. I think the space was the problem... it seems OK now.

The space the system restore points are using keeps getting more and more even if there aren't new points. It seems there are other things that the system does in order for the points to be kept for longer, and those things need space. I think the 1,5GB by defaults weren't enough, because everything is fine now.
