System Restore Question

Re: Windows 7 O/S. In order to try to solve an existing problem I tried, 3 or four times, to create a date in System Restore beyond what the automatic date is and I couldn't do it. In creating a System Restore point, there is a comment that says to Type a description to help identify a restore point. My restore point always ends up as June 26, 2013 and I am trying to get somewhere around June 19 or 20 to clear the point where I think I will clear the problem that I'm having. With that in mind, I typed in an item that I believe was downloaded about that time (June 20) thinking that my restore point would end up being at that point and instead I got that same June 26th date. So, what I'm asking, is how can I establish a date, at least a week prior to June 26th? Thanks

I'm not quite sure what you mean.

When you "create" a restore point, you can only do so for the current date and time, and give the restore point an optional description to help reference it by later so you know what it was for. Restore points will always be time stamped for when they were created.

Are you trying to find an older restore point to restore back to like at step 8 in Option One below?

Because of another on-going problem, I cannot navigate to the link that you provide. So, I will assume that you are asking me, for instance; today is June 27th 2013 and do you (meaning me) want to restore your computer to say June 20th? The answer is yes. You see, I started having my problem around 3 days ago and I feel by restoring my computer to around June 20th, I will be doing so to a time where I didn't have the current problem. Thank You.

You're welcome.

Yes, in that case, you would want to use either option in the tutorial above to do a System Restore and select a restore point (if available) dated before you had this on-going problem to hopefully fix it.

You might use another PC to review the tutorial if needed.

Exactly, why don`t you have restore points that go back to around that date ?

Is your pc not creating restore points for you ?

Hope you understand that "restore points" do NOT act like a time machine; in that, they do not take a snapshot of the PC at a point in time such that, days later, you can restore the PC back to that time.

The function should really be called Windows System Restore -- as what it actually does is overwrite current system files with older versions it squirreled away when making updates. So, if you installed something in the interim, that would affect the registry -- which would be reset back with the restore. But, if you made changes to personal data files, they will NOT be reset back to an earlier point in time.

Apparently it only goes to the current date. If I went on to SR right now, it would say my restore point is June 27, 2013. I have tried to create another date but it keeps coming back to the same date.

Sorry, but you CANNOT create one for another date. You only have the ones you already created. Any new ones you create will ONLY have the current date.

The unit that I have now had Vista O/S which I bought just about the time Seven was due to come out. Because of the time line, I was promised the Seven upgrade free which happened. When it was Vista, I seem to remember a calendar and choices of dates to restore to which made the selection easier. On my unit with Seven, if I went in to SR right now, it would give me today's (June 27,2013) date as the restore. If I try to create another date, it says that I was successful but when I click in to SR again, the 27th is there. You know, I was helping my wife with her Family Tree Maker and did download some software, but I uninstalled it very soon after. Could there have been a problem left in the machine as the result of those operations?
