Hello Pkpetr

System Restore only affects programs, updates and registry settings - it does not affect your personal files, meaning you wont loose any personal data by performing a system restore.

If you selected a restore point 2-3 months ago, then it will attempt to restore the system state and settings to that point in time. Meaning, any programs installed, updated, or registry changes made in last 2-3 months, would be reset to that point in time.

The best way of being sure, is to open system restore, and Select your Restore Point, then select Scan for affected programs . That will generate a list of programs that get uninstalled, or re-installed, should you decide to go ahead with the change.

Thank you dear iko22 for your reply. Please let me know if system restore will delete all recent Speed Dial and Bookmarks links in Opera browser, and IE11 shortcuts on my desktop.
Also do you think System Restore will correct the problem I have with Word Starter 2010, which stopped working lately, and is the reason I wish to do SR? I have tried everything else (repair etc.) with no result. And I am hesitant to uninstall & reinstall it.

Hello Pkpetr
Your Browsers Speed Dial and Bookmarks should be in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\ somewhere, and therefore should not be affected by a System Restore operation.

System Restore could correct a problem with an installed program, like Word Starter 2010, providing you choose a suitable Restore Point, that occurs before the program problem started.

Good luck.

You don't need to use System Restore!

Repair Microsoft Word Starter 2010 in Control Panel?

  1. Launch Program and Features from Control Panel.
  2. Right-click on Microsoft Office Starter Edition 2010 and choose Change.
  3. On the next screen click Yes to start the repair.
  4. Once the repair completes click OK.

I have done what you suggest several times. Msft Office Click-to-Run (rather than Office starter !!!) comes to the screen and gives me the message that <<Internet connection is needed to perform repair and cannot be found>> !!! Fake news, because my Internet connection works OK. And when I try to open any one of my Word documents, I get the message <<Msft Office has encountered a problem with licensing and will need to close. If the problem persists uninstall and reinstall the product>>!!! If I do this do I lose files, shortcuts, settings??? Thanks.

Just downloaded and attempted to install Microsoft Office Starter 2010 on my Win7 SSD & received same internet connection error. Apparently M$ has discontinued support for the product.

Here's a link to a Sevenforums post regarding problems with Office Starter 2010 not opening.
Microsoft Office Starter 2010 will no longer open - Windows 7 ...

When I upgraded to Win10 on one of my SSDs Office Home & Student 2010 would not activate.

I installed LibreOffice, free open source, and all my MS Office files are compatible & accessible.
Little bit of a learning curve but I'm satisfied with the office suite which all appear very similar to Microsoft Office. This may be your best option.

You shouldn't officially be able to install Office Starter 2010. The only official way for it to be installed was for OEM's to pre-install Office 2010, then to choose to run Starter 2010 rather than purchasing Office when you first try to run Office 2010.

I have several machines with OEM pre-installed W7+Office 2010. I can confirm that I can still install, uninstall and reinstall Starter 2010 on such a machine, as such an install is done entirely offline using the pre-installed Office 2010 files as the source.

However, I can also confirm that any operation requiring online access will fail. This includes repairing Starter 2010 or creating the 'Office to Go' USB. It would seem that 13th October was the day MS pulled the plug on the online servers required for this. Good thing I have already made an 'Office to Go' USB then :D

Support for Office 2010 ended on October 13, 2020

Upgrade to Microsoft 365 to work anywhere from any device and continue to receive support.
Getting started with Office Starter - Office Support

PS: If you are thinking of upgrading a W7 machine with Starter 2010 installed to W10, then Setup will say Office Starter 2010 is incompatible and will be unistalled (just Starter, the full Office 2010 can be retained).

However, that only happens if you try upgrading with install media for any version from v1511 up to the latest 20H2. The very first version 10240 (1507) did not uninstall Starter 2010, and once upgraded to W10 any further upgrades wouldn't remove it either. You do have to install Starter while still in W7 though, once upgraded to W10 the option to use Starter is removed from the dialog when you try to open Office 2010 for the first time.

I have one W10 machine running Starter 2010 with no problems in the latest version 20H2. It was retained when it got the free upgrade from W7 to W10 in August 2015 and has continued to work to this day.

Now that you mentioned it, I recall reading that about Starter 2010 a few months back. OP may have same issue, I don't know. Do you have any suggestions to help OP?

As I said, I moved on to LibreOffice and after a short learning curve I'm content with it & it's free!
Thanks for the detailed info. I always enjoy reading your posts.

Thank you very much for your help. Let me try some of the things you have suggested, and read about LibreOffice. I don't know very much about computing, and I don't have an external hard drive. Which one is easiest to use? And I suppose I could not save on the external HD the Word starter files which will not open, right?

Little more research & I came across this Microsoft article on your issue. Are these the steps you tried from reading your post #7?

Office Starter 2010 Issue

Snick, my suggestion would be the same one as shown in your link, to uninstall just Office Starter 2010 then open Office 2010 and choose to use Starter again. My test above confirms that this should still work on a Windows 7 machine as long as the OEM installed Office 2010 is still installed and intact.

As for LibreOffice, it is a fine substitute and I use it on my other machines that don't have an Office licence. I prefer to use the Portable App version as that needs no install. @Pkpetr could try it out without installing.

I uninstalled Word Starter 2010 intending to reinstall it, as this was the way to do it according to advice, but so far all the (supposedly) download sites did not work. Apparently Msft does not let people download it so they will be forced to buy their new products. So I am now without Word, unable to open any of my Word documents. Also I tried System restore, but it could not go back 3-4 months when the problem occurred, but only 2-3 days back. Can anybody suggest something regarding the above? If not, I am now left with two other choices: (1) Batch convert Word docs to pdf, and (2) LibreOffice, assuming it will open Word files (?). Unless there is 3rd one in case Msft Edge can read Word files. Can it?

Sorry to hear you are still having issues! :(

Did you follow the uninstall/reinstall process? If you did, you don't need to download and reinstall. Here are the steps to uninstall and reinstall Office Starter 2010. Yes, LibreOffice is fully compatible with Microsoft Office. You can open all equivalent documents i.e. Word, with LibreOffice Writer, Excel with LibreOffice Calc, etc.

  1. Click Start
  2. Type appwiz.cpl, and then press Enter.
Warning Do not remove Microsoft Office 2010 from the list of installed programs. You will need this to reinstall Microsoft Office Starter 2010.
  3. Click Microsoft Office Starter 2010, and then click Uninstall
    uninstall.png
  4. Click Yes and follow the instructions to uninstall Office Starter 2010.
    yes.png
  5. To reinstall Office Starter 2010, click Start > All Programs > Microsoft Office 2010.
    start-all-programs-microsoft-office-2010.png
  6. Click Use.
    use.png
  7. And then click Open. This will reinstall Office Starter 2010.
    open.png

If the error continues to occur, you may have to do a full restore of the computer to reinstall Microsoft Office Starter 2010.
