System shutting down during logon

Was this a clean install or an upgrade from say Vista? Is it a recent install? Is this PC by any chance connected to an uninterruptible power source, UPS? Good airflow and nice and clean inside the case?

alphanumeric, thanks for the reply. Other than the error message about MSE at startup, MSE appears to work fine. It indicates system protected and can do scans and manual updates. It would appear that the message is about MSE doing auto update and it fails. I have also done full scan of system with Malwarebytes and all OK. I had AVAST 5.0 on here for a while and it never found any issues eithor.

The MSE message may simply be because the PC shut down while it was trying to update its definitions. Some of the other errors may also be because that program couldn't finish what it was trying to do before the PC shut down. It may be hard to sort out what is cause and effect. There are some options in msconfig that might help, you could try Diagnostic startup or selective startup. Maybe have a look at whats being loaded under the startup tab. If there is something in there that you think might be causing your problems you can disable it easily for testing.

I think if it was me, I would be tempted to boot from my windows 7 DVD and do a repair. Then hit windows update again.

The last two times I started the computer I have been able to logon OK. The same 2 errors still happen at startup. I feel these errors happen very early in startup and before I get a chance to logon. I have received a message from Microsoft that they will assist in troubleshooting this issue. Could be some known bug. I can update manually but not sure if the system can do it automaticly at other times.
