Updates when system shutting down

When shutting down, frequently there is a "Do not turn computer off; updates # of # being installed." I do not want updates to be automatically installed; going to Microsoft Security Essentials, I am informed that my "spyware and virus definitions are automatically updated..."; how do I know that those are the only "updates" that are being blindly installed? Isn't there an option somewhere to designate that I want to review and approve of updates before they can be installed?

There is that specific option within windows updates.

on the WU GUI, select the option via Change settings, (top left) >> let me choose.

Hi Hikermann, Torchwood was referring to changing the Windows Update Settings.

Click on Start orb

All Programs

Windows Update

On the left change settings

choose from the dropdown menu - check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install

them.

Thanks to y'all for your information.

The "Download updates but let me choose whether to install them" IS already the specified choice; however, that is NOT what is taking place, since (as noted in my initial posting) 1) there is no such notification or opportunity to choose presented, and 2) the updates automatically are loaded in when Windows is closing and the computer is shutting down. So it seems MS continues on its merry, dogmatic way that it Knows What's Best For People whether they want to actually have a choice or not . . .

Hello Hikerman mate you have updates in the Control Panel right? so what you are telling me/us is that there is no window that comes up when you click on that updates section??

Your answer is reading to me at least that you get the window and choose what is in my pic Can you please send a pic of what you see when you go into Control Panel and click on Windows update as per the yellow squared feature of my pic the line that in in the red square you should be bale to click on that and get four options.

The other thing that you are describing is that you have in that window what is in my pic but Windows is overriding that instruction. In that case something is corrupted so I think it is time in that case to run these please.

Hikermann. Microsoft Security Essential updates do get installed automatically & you do not have the option to opt out of them. However they should be shown in your normal Windows Update section. They are shown as Optional but the only way you can stop them being installed is to uninstall MSE.

The MSE updates are not shown in Installed Updates.

This screen shot shows where you can check on MSE installed updates.

Thanks for the information; I'll go through it tomorrow when "bedtime" is not staring me in the face -- what with Mondays being whatever they are in this work-a-day world . . .

I am not entirely unwilling to have automatic updates happening, but my concern is that if it is running under the radar, as it were, it leaves me vulnerable to having MS insert Windows 10 unannounced and unwelcomed. I've hard sufficient about MS "taking over" and downloading Windows 10 to override Windows 7, and am NOT OK with that; have a neighbor who had that happen; suddenly one morning two weeks ago he turned on his computer and Windows 10 had established itself overnight; never was asked; never wanted it (critical, since he has macular degeneration and knew precisely where everything was on the screen; now suddenly he was faced with an entirely foreign environment . . . NOT welcome; thank you MS). So, fortunately my eyesight is OK, but seeing how his whole file system got flipped sideways, I have no interest whatever in suddenly having Windows 10 "automatically upgrade" my system by downloading and asserting itself.

So, enough for tonight. Will go through what you've sent tomorrow. Many thanks. Appreciated.

No mate the insertion of 10 is over that was only during the phase where they were trying to literally force it onto the computer. How your friend and that older fellow got 10 stuck on his machine just recently sounds a bit odd to me and it would be very interesting to see what the dickens he has been doing, because a Ii said if you want 10 now you have buy it it isn't free as far as I am aware anyway.

Now it could possibly be that his machine has not been switched on for over a year and the 110 update stuf was sitting there but I just don't see it happening.

Now what they could do is contact Microsoft and tell them what has happened and I would be very interested in what they come up with.
