Solved System slows with only 19GB of RAM out of 32GB used

The title pretty much sums it up, my system has 32GB of RAM, but slows down terribly once it gets to about 19GB used. Windows 7 x64. Not sure what other info to include...

How does that happen ?

The memory will build and build in the Standby column, but I`ve never come close to 19 GB, but it`s nothing a reboot can`t fix.

Post a screenshot of Task Manager - Performance tab when the problem occurs.

Note that a large value for standby memory is completely normal and no cause for concern. Standby is the normal state for available memory.

Heavy-duty multitasking: Lots of browser windows/tabs open, photoshop, and a bunch of other applications all open at the same time.

Yes, rebooting helps, but who has time for that?! When you've got a ton of stuff open and in progress, rebooting is a pain, and why should I need to with all that RAM? Seems like it should not significantly slow when there's still 13GB of available memory, and the CPU isn't being taxed either.

I think I found the problem and solution. I found that I had the virtual memory set to a custom size, with both the initial size and max size set at 800MB. A while back (over a year ago), when I upgraded to 32GB of RAM, I remember I read somewhere about changing the virtual memory.

Anyway, last week, I changed it back system managed, and I have not had the slow down since. The most I've seen my RAM usage get up to since then was about 12GB...and that's with 50+ chrome tabs, a bunch of Windows explorer windows and half a dozen application windows open.

I'm marking this as solved.

I understand that there are some unusual situations where a high value for standby memory has caused problems but this is not the normal case. Under normal situations, and most unusual situations as well, a high value for standby memory is a good thing and is a major contributor to good performance. Clearing it would give you a temporary performance hit.
