System time clock

hi all \
has anyone had trouble with the clock changing its time and date at random ? i run windows 7 on my main hard drive and linux kubuntu on a ssd drive and was wondering if this is the cause? i only noticed today when my security software would not update and when i downloaded a program and noticed the install date was the 01/ 11/ 10 and the time was 1 hour fast i have checked the time server and corrected date and time and reset.

Yep, same here. Though my setup is little different. I have dual booted Win7 and Ubuntu and on certain intervals, the system time changes for both the OS.

I'm guessing you've followed all the steps in the Microsoft article Set the clock. It could be a weak or failing CMOS battery.

I have done that as well. Its not the CMOS battery. Its something to do with the mysterious dual boot config.

ah im not alone with this, i am going to try and set the same time server for windows and kubuntu example>> time.nist.gov

I have done that as well. Its not the CMOS battery. Its something to do with the mysterious dual boot config.

my battery is about 11 months old and i have checked the clock settings

It is because you are dual booting. Linux sets the hardware clock one way, Windows reads and sets it another way. Windows use local time, Linux is set by default to use UTC time. The hardware clock has no timezone information so...confusion.

It is because you are dual booting. Linux sets the BIOS clock one way, Windows reads and sets it another way. Windows use local time, Linux is set by default to use UTC time. The BIOS clock has no timezones so...confusion.

kubuntu has the same as windows to change time but the time servers to choose from are not the same

To keep Linux from using UTC, right click on the clock > preferences > uncheck the UTC box. Or, if you don't have a clock you can edit /etc/default/rcS and change the line UTC=yes to UTC=no. If you need to change the time zone you can run sudo tzselect.

To log in as root and change the UTC settings, use the command:
gksu gedit /etc/default/rcS

Don't know if this will help or not.

thanks i will try that the time went back a hour when i went into kubntu and back again to windows just now its a bit annoying to keep changing the time but i noticed the date stayed the same thats what messes things up if the date is wrong.

this is the command i used in terminal in kubuntu (using Kate the text editor is default in kubuntu)

sudo kate /etc/default/rcS

change the line UTC=yes to UTC=no (in the text editor and click save)


so far so good it seems to have worked i have booted in and out of both kubuntu and windows 4 times and the clock has been the right time on each

how to stop the time settings changing in duel booting with linux and windows using terminal in kubuntu by changing UTC default settings.

thank you it helped just had to alter some of the command for the version of linux i am using

Glad you were able to figure out what to do. My knowledge of Linex Linux is being able to spell it right most of the time. Sincerely hope this will be a permanent fix.
