Solved System Time Falls Back 1 Hour

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate on an HP 580T with 12 Gigs of RAM.

For about a week now, I'm noticing the system time keeps falling back one hour.

When it was time to "spring ahead" one hour, the clock updated as it should. But Im noticing during the last week or so that the time has fallen back one hour.

I've gone to the change date and time settings and corrected the time but within a few hours, it falls back again.

When I go to the BIOS, the system clock has the correct time so I'm guessing it is something in Windows.

The steps I've taken are:

Virus scan in safe mode: negative results.
Malware scan in safe mode: negative results.

Windows updates are current.
I've disabled synchronization with a network time server.

You don't realize how important the correct time is on you computer until it is wrong!

Any suggestions?

Could be a broken CMOS Battery try replacing that.

It might be the CMOS battery, but then the BIOS time should be wrong.

Try disabling:
- automatically update time from a server ("internet time" / "synchronization")
- automatically adjust time for daylight savings

The settings are spread around various places in "timedate.cpl" (control panel).

The time in the BIOS is correct. In fact, so is the date. If it was the battery, I'd guess the time in the bios would be wrong.

- I've disabled time server sync prior to this post, but the problem still exists.

- Currently, the automatic adjust for daylight savings is checked. I will try to uncheck it and see what happens.

It's been two days since I unchecked the automatic DST and the problem seems to be "resolved". But the trouble is that i want the computer to automatically adjust for DST. So, now knowing that the problem is related to DST, what would cause the computer to keep "falling back" when it shouldn't do so until November?

All the hardware works perfectly with Win7. Index of 6.7 with Gigabyte HD 4670 graphics.
Sorry to say that I just sat down at my computer today and even with DST update box unchecked, the time has fallen back one hour. I'm in NY Eastern time zone.

I'm wondering if I picked up a virus or malware which is causing this problem....

Problem Solved

I know that there have been many causes of the problem I described here. HP insisted that it was the mother board as changing the CMOS battery didn't resolve the issue. Personally, I didn't think it was the CMOS battery as the date and time was always correct even though it was incorrectly displayed in the task bar.

They wanted to send me a box with a return label to send it back for warranty repair; they were very slick. You see, I have an on site warranty where the technician is supposed to come to my home. It was only after I pointed that out that they offered to send someone.

I decided I would reinstall the OS. I really believed it was something I picked up off the web. Apparently, I was right as I've done a fresh install and the time has been true for a week.

Thank you to all that pitched in to help.

Similar time sync problem

Hi

I am writing from Slovenia, I've had a similar problem with win7 time syncing for years, one different machines and different distros (premium, home, pro, ...). The problem arises after a new install on a computer, but randomly - as in after some installs time sync works as should, sometimes it does not.

This is a trick I've found to eliminate the problem:

First time sync without automatic DST. After time is synced accordingly (no DST shift), turn on DST.
If done like this time was always synced properly, as stated, otherwise it was a gamble.
After I found this trick I tried a couple of times using different time zones for the first sync. It also didn't seem to produce the problem.

GMT + 1 (Ljubljana) here was usually exactly 2 hours late, if problems did rise up. Anyways, it is always an exact shift (1, 2, 3 hours), never just some random time.

Same thing, Solved (for now)

Same thing, I'm also in the same region as Dolinko (CET+1, Prague). Turning off Daylight Saving Time helped but I also had to use a different server. Either servers "tick.usno.navy.mil" or "128.105.37.11" worked for me (you can add more servers in registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersio n\DateTime\Servers). The other ones, not so much. Again, I'm not sure how permanent this solution is and there's also DST change next week in Europe so I'll be monitoring this.

Just started on my pc this morning, an hour early. Bios clock okay. Corrected the clock and did an update on windows time server and immediately went back again. And yes, Time zone and everything is correct, it just started happening. Turned off the time service and its ok after reboot, so something with their servers?
