Whenever I try System Restore I get the message that it failed because my antivirus is active and I should disable it an try again. I get this message even when I have disabled the antivirus and firewall. Any ideas?

You have AVG, right? I have it to and I have never had a problem like this. Are you using the AVG firewall or the Windows Firewall? What exactly is the error?

For this issue remove all the restore points and restart the Volume shadow copy services (VSS)

To do this follow the steps given below:

To remove all the restore points:
->Click start button, select computer and right click on it and select properties.
->Click advanced system settings tab, now select system protection tab.
->Highlight partition c, click on configure button, and then click delete.
->Then repeat this steps for the other partitions too, if applicable.

Restart the VSS services:
->Click start button, in search box type services.msc and press enter. If you prompted for the authentication of password go with it.
->Double click the service volume shadow copy
->Click on the general tab, make sure that the startup type is automatic or manual. Then click the stop button under service status to stop the service. Now click the start button to restart the service.

Now manually create the restore point.

If the anti virus stops System Restore from working properly just boot into safe mode and do a system restore from there. Works everytime for me!

I deleted all the old restore points, the VSS was off so I turned it on, and when I go to system restore there is one point of 12/03/2012. If I leave it alone will it create more restore points or do I need to manually do it ? Which I can't figure out how to do.

Type "system restore" into the start button search box.

Choose "create a restore point" from the list you then see.

If you can't then create a point, post back.

Pay attention to System Restore points over the next week or two and discover for yourself if new points are created.

On my PC, 6 or 8 are created automatically every month. Yours may vary a bit. Right now, I have more than a dozen since March 15; I didn't manually create any of them.
