Taking out IDE harddrive error "Disc boot failure, insert system..."

Hello im unsure where to place this thread. " Disc boot failure, insert system disc and press enter " Is the error i get after i took out an IDE 80GB HDD. The primary boot drive is a OCZ vertex 2 120GB. Somehow my pc will not boot unless the 80GB HDD is in. Im unsure how they are related so could anyone help me out so that i dont need the 80GB HDD to boot up anymore.

When you installed the OCZ drive, it sound like you had the 80gb HD connected. So the boot up files got written to the 80 gb HD. Do you have a Win7 install DVD ? If so run startup repair 3 times in a row with the 80gb disconnected.

is it normal for it now to take a long time to detect IDE channels? EDIT After the 3rd repair and a restart its seems stuck at "verifying DMI pool data" EDIT2: It managed to continue and threw the whole disc boot failure error. What do i do now?

Disconnect every drive except the OCZ. Boot into the installation disk, at the first screen do not select your language, hold down shift key and press F10. You will get a window come up, type diskpart and press enter, wait for the window to reply diskpart. type list disk and press enter. You should have only 1 disk listed #0. type select disk 0 and press enter. when it replys type list partition and press enter. Write down what it says. if you have just 1 partition type select partition 1, it will respond. type active and press enter. it will say the partition is marked active. type exit and press enter. type exit and press enter again. you will be back to where you were. select your language, then in the lower left corner select repair my computer. run startup repair 3 times again whth reboots in between each time. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/681-startup-repair.html then come back and tell us what the list partition said and what happened.

After trying repair startup without succedd, Ive tried using bcdboot in windows cmd and it worked! Just now it take quite a while to boot at both finding connected IDE devices or verifying DMI pool, is there a way to remedy it? As it takes significantly longer then before. What happened?

How many partitions on disk 0? And did you go to bios and make the DVD drive boot device #1 and the OCZ drive boot device #2?

EDIT: ive done the changes in the BIOS, but its really slow in detecting IDE channels and verifying DMI pool EDIT3: i rebooted and it gave me the disc boot failure, so as recommended before i shall try repair startup 3 times

Hi renren

You could re clone over the OS from your HDD to SSD via Acronis etc just remember to pull the HDD when your finished or you may have the option to delete the source drive then pull it.

Hello Miss, My OS is on the SDD FYI, sorry if i didnt make it clear. I accidentally booted the SDD on its own, and it went to windows like a breeze. Hope this information helps. I will try the diskpart again.

I did it properly this time it reported no problems, and only 1 partition. 111GB 1024 offest For some reason it boots incredibly faster without the other 3 HDDs

Call me Steph :D, Wondering - did you change the drive letters ? if so move anything you want to keep off the other HDDs and then full format them.

Another thing is you should have the SSD on the SATA port to make it Disk 0, not the HDD.
In BIOS you also should have a HDD priority setting apart from Boot Priority, make the SSD #1 in that. You also have two active partitons, there should be only one, the OS partition.

After consideration i decided that one of the harddrives are holdig the system down. So through the process of elimination i found the older IDE drive to be the cause of these slow boot ups. I thank everyone for their time! +1s to everyone. I did everyone's advice and managed to get the SSD to boot as the OS. Im not sure who to thank, so everyone got rep from me =]

Sorry for coming in late.
In your screenshot Disk 0, Drive D: is marked Active. It is not recommended to have 2 disks marked Active in a system. The BIOS will choke trying to figure out which Active partition to hand off to.
Only Disk 2, Drive C: should be marked active (The SSD).

You could recover use of Disk 0 without boot delay if you remove the Active flag:

As suggested several times now, the OS partition should be in DISK0 position if at all possible, and only it should be marked Active.

You were correct to unplug all other HD's to test which was slowing boot as that would have been my first suggestion besides moving OS to DISK0 if possible and marking all others Inactive.
