What happens when you try?

Do you have taskbar button grouping enabled to show icons instead of the wider buttons?

Please post a screenshot showing what you mean to see if it may help ID the issue more.

Lock the toolbar
Always combine hide labels

I have no idea what the taskbar properties should show . I am now having the same problem with my notebook win 7 home prem . This started a couple of weeks ago .Is it possible that a windows update could do this

First I want to thank you for trying to help
Even after reading the instructions on how to send a screenshot I have no idea how to do it
I am not a 20 year old geek I know a little about compters having used windows from my first computer
3.1, 95, 98, 98se, and xp
XP was the best . I do not intend to spend any more time on this
If i decide i will re install windows

If you like, give more details about what happens when you try to add more than five icons. I'm trying to visualize what your taskbar looks like when doing this to see what may be going on.

Well one more time . The taskbar looks just the same before the problem and after the problem I now only have four shortcuts .I deleted one then i tried to pin another nothing happened . I can pin to the start menu. I like the taskbar because one click and the program opens
If it is on the start menu I then have to click on start then click on program .What is the point of having the taskbar if one cannot use it
something has happened in the last couple of weeks . To scan the computer I have Avast \CCleaner\Win defender and Malwarebytes anti- malware thats it . Is windows update the probelm ? that will not be the first time

What are you trying to "Pin to Taskbar"?

You might check to see if they may be getting pinned to the jump list (right click on taskbar icon) of the already pinned icon of the program it belongs to instead.

If this is not the case, then you could try doing a system restore using a restore point dated before you had this issue to hopefully undo and fix it.

For some reason or another i do not have a jump list cannot find, and i have read all the instructions but they do not help . I only store about 7 days of restore they do not always work .I might decide to use anothe OS

What do you see when you right click on a pinned icon on the taskbar? Anything like this below?
