i left my computer on at night and i let the screensaver go on, as i move the mouse to go to my desktop this morning. the task bar was half gone. all that was on the bottom was the start windows logo. Im wondering if my computer is set to turn off the hd or something when the computer isn't touched for 30 min. would that have anythin to do with this?

As far as it goes, there is a known issue with letting your computer sit for a period of time, and when the screen wakes, the mouse being able to move but the computer being unresponsive for a minute or so.

Try waiting a couple minutes and see if the computer become responsive, if so, this may be the same issue.

That happens to me with my laptop. Sometimes I leave it on while I sleep at night, and when I get up in the morning and get out of the screen saver, only the start orb is visible, and its even clickable, but the rest of the taskbar is gone. The only way I can get it to come back up is by CTRL+SHIFT+DEL to bring up task manager, end explorer.exe and then start another instance of it. Its a minor annoyance.

Semi-solution

I had this happen to me and I found this thread, but I recalled recently installing a third party screen saver, it works great, but I think it made this problem come about.

I went to my screen saver menu and asked to "preview" and then immediately ended the preview, and there was my taskbar, a little easier than doing the CTL+ALT+DEL method.

Well I think what is causing it isthe following combination, as someone else already mentioned, third party screen savers. When your PC goes from screen saver to hibernate is when I have the problem. I first thought it was closing my laptop that was causing the problem but then I change settings to go to screen saver at 1 minute and hibernate at 2 and that replicated the results perfectly.

Not sure on a fix even still

I have used the setting for taskbar Auto hide and that seems to work. I have also had luck using Irfanview and made a customized screensaver from JPEG files and changed the Slideshow Play Mode from Full Screen to Play in Window and set the dimensions for something like 1024x768. The play in Window feature works well and does not force the screen to black out and when user resumes the Taskbar does not disappear. Under Slideshow Options remove the checkmark for Show text, otherwise each of your pages will have a watermark for each filename and location of file. Irfanview has a user guide that explains when creating your customized screensaver.

You have to restart the explorer.exe by hitting CRTL+ALT+DEL and click Task Manager or Windows Key + R and enter taskmgr and OK. Then under Processes find explorer.exe and End Process. Then click File, New Task (Run) and type explorer.exe, OK and the Taskbar will be restored. This is behavior from 3rd Party Screensavers that Windows does not like. So customizing screensaver with Irfanview to run Slideshow Play Mode in Play in Window works for us.
