I find it very annoying with labels appearing over the icons when I already know what the icon is for. This is even more annoying when the label covers almost the entire length of the taskbar.

Does anyone know how to get rid of these labels altogether? I suspect it may mean a visit o the registry.

Hi there,

Could you please take a screenshot? I'm not sure what you're referring to exactly.

Hello Ed,

Welcome to Seven Forums.

For the Taskbar, rt. click and choose properties. For Taskbar buttons select 'always combine hide labels'. For a toolbar on the taskbar, unlock taskbar, rt. click on toolbar, and deselect 'show text', and lock taskbar back.

Hope this is what your looking for.

Hi, everybody. Thanks for the welcome and the info.

All presently set at "Always combine, hide labels". I tried the others but it didn't help.

Ah, you're talking about the alt-text for toolbar items. Try right-clicking the troublesome item and selecting Rename, then give it something short & sweet. Let me know if that helps.

Hi Walker,

no, your suggestion does not work. I was wondering about this question myself.

For example, I have a shortcut to Nero Burning Rom on my Quick Launch toolbar. If I hover the mouse over it, I get a huge pop-up which has two lines.

The first one says "Nero Burning ROM".

The second says
"Nero Burning ROM is the professional solution for burning your audio, data, and video disks, backing up entire disks, and much more. Features many advanced settings and options and supports a wide range of formats".

This second line is very annoying as it covers pretty much all of the taskbar, while being totally useless. Your suggestion to rename the shortcut only changes the content of the first line, i.e. I can change "Nero Burning ROM" to just "Nero". The second line though stays the same.

Any suggestions?

Hi, everybody.

Shortcuts to files, folders and browser links etc can be altered okay, but I'm afraid the apps can't can't be altered with a right click.

Like I said earlier. I think it has to be a registry job; if anyone has the nerve and knowhow to try it out, I for one would be eternally grateful! It drives me nuts evey time I see it.

This might work > Go to folder options and under the view tab, un-check "Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items"

Nice find, alphanumeric.. but that's not doing it on my machine. It works for anything on the desktop and in Explorer, but not for toolbar items.

Actually, it looks like these pop-ups depend on the program. For example, the majority of my Quick Launch items only show 1-line pop up description: Firefox, UltraIso, etc. But some, such as Skype, Internet Explorer, or Nero show 2-line pop ups. The first line is just the software title. This I would consider useful, what if you forget the meaning of some icon? But the second line appears to be a description of what the software does. This I definitely do not need, especially in the case of Nero, where this line covers the whole screen length. Anybody knows how to turn off this particular feature leaving the title as it is?

No-go with 'View' in Folder Options,as Walker says.

Anyone got the nerve to mess with the registry? I've taken a look but could not find anything. There is a lot of it, to'!

I only have the default windows taskbar and I"m not seeing those long descriptions. I know they did bother me in XP and I think there was a tweakui option to get ride of them. Actually in XP I think you could actually edit them if you wanted to. If you right click one of those shortcuts and go to properties look under the general tab for "Description:". Is what is listed there what you see when you hover over that icon?

Hi, Everybody.

I can't believe it was so easy - at least with the Outlook icon. Right click//Properties an on the Shortcut tab, just above 'Avanced' is a box headed "Comment". This held the long description. Unfortunately it does not happen for URL shortcuts, but this might be useful for Unifex.

At least a step in the right direction! :)

^I think it would be difficult without a registry hack and which I would not recommend for such a matter. Pretty sure there is no adjustment setting within Windows (taskbar). Anyone else please correct me...

What about ticking 'only show notifications' for some of your apps - it's what I do and means the taskbar is less cluttered.

Windows XP - Now Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit).
Personally instead of using/adding the quick launch toolbar I just put the shortcuts on my desktop and then right click them and select "pin to the taskbar". For outlook I just launched the program, right clicked its taskbar ICON and then pined it to my taskbar so its there even if outlook isn't running. My desktop icons are hidden and I do everything from my taskbar. The toolbar title and text is hidden so its nice and clean, icons only. If I hover my cursor over an ICON that isn't active all I see is the name, Control Panel, Outlook, Shutdown, etc. To each his own though ever body has reasons for doing things the way they like it. Just my 2 cents. :)

I agree, Alphanumeric...

I eventually capitulated and moved the Outlook icon to the Taskbar via "Pin to..."

I reckon that has to be the standard practice. A links bar may be useful for shortcuts to files when the option to pin is not given. So given both options, the 'Bar' sitting at the bottom of the desktop should have everything you want - one way or the other.

You could say this means we have all been digging around for nothing, but I have always been right handed!!

Thanks everyone for your contribution to this thread. Nice to know you're all out there.

Pinning them to your taskbar changes their functionality some too. If you right click the icon on the taskbar you get completely different options than if you right click the original shortcut on your desktop. Right click the Outlook Icon and you will see what I mean. Its hit or miss for some of them though. For instance I have autorun turned off and use thumb drives quit frequently. I would have liked to pin the Computer ICON to the taskbar but it won't let you. In this case I did end up adding a "Computer" toolbar to my taskbar.

Me too, but I rarely need "Computer" so only have the C:\ drive opening at my personal folder. From there I can open any other drive as well. I also build my own icons so I get a more descriptive indication of what is what.

All in all, everything works okay. My biggest disappointment is the inability to place a links bar at the side of the desktop as we could with XP and Vista. This gave me about 25 links to everyday programmes and some website which I had got really usd to. Even now I try instinctively to bring my old links bar up. Maybe Microsoft will give us an update for it when SP1 is launched in the autumn.
