Solved Taskbar: Removing Icons?

Look, I have looked all over the internet and everywhere tells me the same thing.

Click the arrow on task bar>>customize>>customize notification icons>>change behavior of icon to only show notifications/hide icon and notifications.

Guess what...it doesn't work. I hide both of these stupid printer icons, they still remain there. I restart my computer still there. I switch to a different option...restart etc, still there. I have other random icons where I try the same as the above and the same thing happens--nothing.

I have severe OCD, please help me!!

The printer icons remain on the system notification tray area or they remain in the show hidden icons area?

If you do not want the icons in the system notification area at all (the same icons/features should be available in the start menu for that object), then see if the printer allows you to remove the icon from the notification area (right click.... configure/options/... or possibly show icon in notification area)

A screen shot will help a lot. If I wasn't clear on the right click menu options, it's because I don't know what printers you have. Another screen shot would help there, or simply post the available items shown in the alternate menu

The printer icon and many many other icons display in the the hidden icons area. I tried going into "customize" and tried 2 different options. 1 option to change the behavior of the icon was "only show notifications." The second option I tried was "hide icon and notifications." Both options were unsuccessful in removing the icons from the "show hidden icons arrow."

I attached a pdf with multiple screenshots of my problem.

Right clicking on the printer icons should give you an alternate menu - try it and post what menu picks are presented. There might be "show icon in systray" or simply "exit" menu picks. Then again, there might be "options" pick where your printer controls the system tray icon for your print monitor.


Here's an example of right clicking Avast on my machine that shows the alternate menu (I already removed my printer(s) monitor(s) so I can't give you a closer example)

Well, in case all else fails, you can always modify the resources of the DLL that is responsible for the tray icon and corrupt the particular icon so that Windows stops loading it. It's really ugly, so you shouldn't do this unless you are truly reaching despair. I hope you find a better workaround.

You're welcome - glad the issue was resolved.

One minor point that I noticed in your recent post.
Tuneup utilities - Windows 7 is fairly robust and there is little reason to use 3rd party tuneup / tweak utilities. Some are merely front end user interfaces for native functions, others are "home grown" functions that might do more harm than good.
My general recommendation is to never use a 3rd party app where a native function exists. I do use a few trusted single purpose utilities, but never a 'toolbox' utility.

I am not familiar with the application you have on your machine, it might do it's job well. Try to use it sparingly if at all.

I just took a cursory look and there are some features that I strongly recommend you never use

• Any of the Optimizers
• Registry cleaner & Registry Defrag -> cCleaner is the only utility I use for registry. It is far less aggressive than any other and I use it sparingly. I also selectively clean entries - never a wholesale clean of what it finds.
• Disk Cleaner -> use native Disk Cleanup instead
• Any wizard
• Disk Doctor -> use native check disk instead
• Economy mode - not sure what this actually does and it might cause issues down the road if it 'turns off' essential services
• Anything automatic -> this type of 'tune up' makes troubleshooting an issue very difficult - it obscures changes to your system
• Any function in the Tweak & Style Up section

That doesn't leave much, does it? Basically use the reporting features.

It looks as though it is a purchased application, so I hesitate in recommending it being uninstalled.

Anyway.... I noticed it was on your machine and thought I'd offer a recommendation.
