I have a laptop running 7 Home Premium that will not connect to the internet on any of 3 NICs. I have gone thru the netsh and reset tcpip stack fixes. No luck. It was working but just stopped a couple of weeks ago.

Looking at device manger(show hidden)\non plug and play drivers\ tcp/ip registry compatibility
I see that the driver is not starting. It will not start and I am getting the error message "the system cannot find the file specified".
The driver location points to correct location and the file is there.

The System event viewer shows the following:
1st - Warning - WLAN AutoConfig service has successfully stopped.- Event ID 4001 (even though services says it is running)
2nd - Error - The TCP/IP Registry Compatibility service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified - Event ID 7000
3rd - Critical - Task Scheduler service has encountered RPC initialization error in "RpcServerUseProtseq:ncacn_ip_tcp". Additional Data: Error Value: 14. - Event ID 404

Any ideas?

It sounds like some type of system file problem.

You should try running the sfc/scannow command from an elevated command prompt and see if it can find or fix any file integrity problems. Sometimes you have to restart and run the command a few times before it fixes anything.

You could also try using system restore but it never seems to be working in these cases..

Kinda of what I thought too. 1st I thought "virus". I ran stinger...nothing. Then I thought file problem... Chkdsk came back with nothing. Then I did a system restore back to when the laptop was still working... No improvement.

It's goofy. It will "connect" to wifi but always come back with an APIPA. It will connect through its Ethernet card but always come back with an APIPA.

I have never "uninstalled" one of those "hidden" non-PNP drivers in device manager before. I was wondering if I could get it back?

I guess scannow is worth a try. Can't hurt. But why can't it find the file? Registry?

It can't find the file if it's not there. The scan will tell you what's wrong. ;)

The file is there. I ran scannow. It did not find any problems.

There is a specific fix for this problem that might work. The link below shows a way to restore the default start up type for the TCP/IP registry compatibility. Just select your version of Windows and download the file then follow directions.

Note. Make sure that the tcpipreg.sys file exists in the %WinDir%\System32\drivers folder. If this file is missing you can try to restore it from your Windows 7 installation media.

Thanks, for your suggestion. I tried that but it did not help. Basically it resets the start up to automatic. I'll keep digging.
