Solved TEAC DV W28S-RT cd drive not burning !

hi there. a few months back i did a complete re install of my toshiba qosmio G-50 , changing it from windows 7 ultimate 32 bit to 64 bit. since doing this i have not been able to burn any dvd,s using nero which i have installed, convertXto dvd and also windows media centre. yet i can play dvds and cd,s. also, since i changed the OS i have been unable to back up anything . really dont know where to begin other than here . any help would be gratefully appreciated. ps. i,m not by any means a computer whizz !!! cheeers

Try a reinstall of the Teach drive. Go to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for the drive and then LEFT click "Uninstall" DO NOT uninstall the driver (the only drivers are the built in Windows drivers). Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the drive. If there were any Windows corruptions this will fix that.

If that does not fix it, reinstall the Intel Motherboard Chipset drivers as the drive may not be detected properly (as a burner drive).

As a side note, with only 4GB of RAM the 64 bit OS does nothing for you, as the prime reason for having 64 bit OS is that it will address more than 4GB of RAM. In fact the 64 bit OS uses more basic RAM than a 32 bit.

hi there.... when i go into device manager and click on disk drives, there are 2 that show up below. both appear as ST9250827AS. which one of these should i right click on and uninstall ????

If you only have one drive, Uninstall both of them then reboot. That may be the problem, with only one drive, that it got installed twice somehow.

NO, i have 2 drives. ITS a toshiba qosmio G50 . 500 gb capacity .2 x 250 gb. drives . should i rightclick on both that are showing in device manager and uninstall them ???

Stop. I missed what you had showing. The CD/DVD drive is not showing in the Device Manager, just your hard drives.

As I previously noted, reinstall the Intel Motherboard chipset drivers, then restart the PC and see if the CD/DVD drive is recognized.

sorry, my mistake. in device manager there is a DVD/CD- ROM DRIVES LISTING. i click on that and below shows TEAC DV W28S- RT...should i right click on that and uninstall ? and where would i find the Intel Motherboard chipset drivers ?

Yes, uninstall the drive and then restart the PC and see if its properly detected.

Hold off on the chipset drivers until you see if the Uninstall fixed the problem.

Either the PC vendor or Intel will have the chipset drivers. If you go to www.intel.com and then drivers, Intel has a program that will scan your system and list what Intel drivers are available.

just to clarify. you suggest that i right click on uninstall TEAC DV W28S- RT in device manager. and then restart my pc. had to ask as i,m pretty nervous when it comes to uninstalling important things like this !!!

okay,,, i uninstalled it then restarted my computer. i have gone back into device manager and it is still there ? does it re-install automatically upon re-start ?

Yes, Windows should have detected it when Windows started up and reinstalled it.

What is the Status in the Device Manager? Does it have an error code or show as working OK?

hi there. i just looked . there are no error codes showing at all in device manager . i just tried to burn something to disc again though but still not burning .

i went to the intel web site and clicked on download drivers with the Intel Driver Update Utility . this failed. it told me possible web browser compatibility , firewall or installation issues detected ?? after this failed i tried this again using internet explorer but no joy.

After reconsidering, I don't think reinstalling the chipset drivers will help this one. I suspect a hardware failure in the drive. Unfortunately the only way to prove the drive is the problem is to replace it with a known good drive.

hi there... its very puzzling though as i can still burn cd,s but not dvd,s. i used to have the toshiba burning software that came pre-installed with my qosmio when i bought it , but after re installing my OS from 32 bit to 64 bit i lost it ! i have nero and convertxto dvd and windows media centre but all failed .

I would suspect the Laser intensity is the problem. DVD's require more Laser intensity than a CD. If the Laser intensity drops, as I suspect, its time for a new drive.
