Technet Plus changed and Reduced number of Keys to 5

My problem ALSO with the new system is that some products I got keys for I don't know what the key is if I have to re-install since I left all the keys on the MS site.

I should have copied the keys to my local hard drive but I didn't expect in normal circumstances to be in this situation.

All my products have been reset to KEYS CLAIMED 0 / 5 so presumably I'd have to download products again if needed and claim new keys.

Cheers

Jimbo

Sign in to your account - go to the Downloads page and look in the upper left - should be MY PRODUCT KEYS - look there. Hope it works, worth a try.

Best advice....read the Eula. When you purchase software, you don't "own it". You have been granted a license to "use" it. Very different concepts.

That is true but doesn't really change the issue. I was "granted a license to use 10 keys" when I paid them my money. Now they've taken away 5/8 keys. This change should really have been made for new subscriptions/renewals and they should have honored the "contracts" "signed" when you paid for the subscriptions.

The perceived uncaring/heavy handed behavior only hurts their image in a lot of people's minds. MS does NOT need to draw any more fire on to themselves. Thier fans and tech pros do them a TREMENDOUS service in public relations. They should realize that and take care not to damage that releationship like this.

Did it actually say 10 keys anywhere? It seems people used to ask all of the time, "how many keys do I get and how many activiations?". So, I don't think it was stamped all over the program in any way.

Thier fans and tech pros do them a TREMENDOUS service in public relations. They should realize that and take care not to damage that releationship like this.
What are we the tech pros going to do though?

--Would we say that MS is now evil and our corporate clients should rid themselves of everything Microsoft immediately and go with another operating system in their business?

--In many ways, I think these programs with their ridiculously low costs can actually be a disservice, as it gives us the ability to load up just about anything we want with very little cost...but then once we decide that we really need to sell it to a customer, it's a ton of money for the licenses, CAL's, etc... I hear it around here all of the time. Somebody plays with a Linux server at home or at work...and somebody here says, "Screw that, use 2008 R2 instead...it's great, it's what I use...wasting your time on Linux is just that..a waste of your time". However, the costs to actually run a server 2008 box for something like an FTP server for public use can get very, very expensive...by time you pay for the unlimited connector license for the web services. But what do people with Technet care, to screw around with it for them, was next to nothing in terms of costs.

For the record, I dislike the fact that this had to happen and as a consumer I wouldn't be thrilled with it. However, I understand why it was done and I can understand why it was done with little to no communication. I still maintain that for $199...what you get with this program...with just 2 keys is pathetically cheap. It's actually mindboggling to me that Technet doesn't cost at least $1,500 a year with expiring keys.

For those who are really upset, persue Microsoft and consider dropping your subscription. There is a plethora of free software alternatives out there...you don't have to use Microsoft.

I called TechNet here in the US and was told this action was the direct result of trying to counter piracy of MS software.

Having worked in Law Enforcement, I always found it frustrating that we had to play by the rules, and the bad guys didn't. I know how MS feels. Blame the bad guys, you know who you are.........................................................................

I just spoke to a TechNet phone-person and he confirmed that the change is permanent.

Who hasn't contacted MS adout it, I posted this almost 2 days ago.

For those that haven't realized or checked for them-selves ...

We still get 5 / 2 keys each for W_7
Ultimate
Pro
H Premium and so on

The same with the Office products

2010 5
2007 5

XP 5

All the Vista's 5 each.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not being an apologist for MS, I'm as mad as he!! like everyone else about them breaking a contract but I can live with what I have.

The software is what I want access to. ;)

I'm going to say this and I don't care ...

I'm p!ssed everyone 'harvested' all those keys they won't use and just made it look like we're all pirates and y'all have helped to make it hard on the rest of us that have abided by the rules, I wish there were a way for MS to deal with that side of it so we didn't have to pay for your actions; y'all deserve what you get but I don't.

i didn't harvest (and am kicking myself for it) - but why is harvesting so bad??

you paid for them, you're perfectly entitled to have them.

harvesting isn't bad, it's selling keys on ebay that's bad - so why didn't m$ punish those pirates, rather than everybody?

paraphrasing someone else on some other forum: "Well at least it's clear now, we don't trust microsoft, and they don't trust us."

And my "I don't care" reply is...
When I got my 'script, June of 2009, I got, or "harvested", the 10 keys I was alloted for the various software versions, just as the rules allowed. To date I have activated 5 for Win7 Ultimate, and 5 for Win7 Professional at one time or another. The fact I haven't, and may never, use the other 5 does not make me a pirate, or even look like one.

I got the keys I paid for and it is my choice/need to use, or not.

If I were a pirate, I'd be Piggie the Pirate and I'd be cute!

Agreed that harvesting in and of itself isn't bad. Selling them, is obviously way out of line. But giving them away to friends, family, coworkers and such is also out of line.

From Microsoft's viewpoint, if a Technet subscription is opened up and a single key is retrieved...the software is likely being used by the person who bought it and all is well. If however, within days, all 10 keys are retrieved for multiple products....it might give the impression that the keys are being given away or sold.

Unfortunately in the software world, the measures taken against piracy are often most felt by those who are not pirating. the pirates simply work around the measure and go on stealing.

I still feel that with 2 keys and 10 activations...you MORE than get your monies worth out of $199 for a year subscription. You have to compare this against the cost of the retail software which is way more money.

I have an MSDN subscription at work, and I've only retrieved 1 key pretty much for the products that I need. Even though multiple keys are available, I don't see the need to run out and get all of them

The FACTS about the keys on the "NEW" Technet !

hi !

since i´ve been reading through ALL posts in the thread in the technet-forum, i have summarized all the important information.

this info comes from Michael G Kinsman MSFT, Moderator.
with some detailed explanations regarding my questions from Kenneth Myhre

Here are the "NEW" rules:

"The reduction is only for desktop version of Microsoft products, like Windows 7, Windows XP, Office 2007 and Office 2010. All other software has the same amount of keys as before."

"There is no official list of how many keys you get per product. But except the list under, you get 10 keys per product. And ONE MAK key per Windows Server 2008 and R2 product. And a MAK key for Vista Enterprise on Technet Pro (100 activations).

And here is my list with the number of keys per product that has changed the last week:
Office 2010 Standard - 2 or 5 keys.
Office 2010 Proplus - 2 or 5 keys.
Windows 7 Starter - 2 or 5 keys.
Windows 7 Starter N and KN - 2 or 5 keys.
Windows 7 Home Basic - 2 or 5 keys.
Windows 7 Home Premium - 2 or 5 keys.
Windows 7 Home Premium N and KN - 2 or 5 keys.
Windows 7 Professional - 2 or 5 keys.
Windows 7 Professional N and KN - 2 or 5 keys.
Windows 7 Ultimate - 2 or 5 keys.
Windows 7 Ultimate N and KN - 2 or 5 keys.
Windows 7 Enterprise - 500 activations only on Technet Pro (One MAK key = 500 activations) This MAK key also work on Win 7 Professional.
Office 2007 Standard - 2 or 5 keys.
Office 2007 Enterprise - 2 or 5 keys.
Office 2007 Ultimate - 2 or 5 keys.
Office 2007 Professional - 2 or 5 keys.
Office 2007 Professional Plus - 2 or 5 keys.
Access 2007 - 2 or 5 keys.
Access 2010 - 2 or 5 keys.
Windows XP Home Edition - 2 or 5 keys.
Windows XP Home Edition K - 2 or 5 keys.
Windows XP Home Edition KN - 2 or 5 keys.
Windows XP Tablet PC Edition - 10 keys.
Windows XP Professional - 2 or 5 keys.
Windows XP Professional Edition K - 2 or 5 keys.
Windows XP Professional Edition KN - 2 or 5 keys.
Windows XP Professional x64 Edition - 2 or 5 keys.
Windows XP Media Center Edition - 2 or 5 keys.

You understand that 2 keys = Technet Standard and 5 keys = Technet pro? So we are clear on that.

2 keys = 20 activations
5 keys = 50 activations

All other software gives you 10 keys. Or ONE MAK key with 500 activations (Server 2008 and R2) and 100 activations for Vista Enterprise (only on Technet Pro)"

"
Each MAK key has 500 activations. And you get:
Technet Pro:

  • Windows Server 2008: Standard and Enterprise = 1 MAK key, DataCenter = 1 MAK key, Web and HPC = 1 MAK key. Total of 1.500 activations on Server 2008
  • Windows Server 2008 R2: Standard and Enterprise = 1 MAK key, DataCenter = 1 MAK key, Web and HPC = 1 MAK key. Total of 1.500 activations on Server 2008 R2
  • Windows 7 Enterprise and Professional = 1 MAK key
  • Windows Vista Enterprise and Business = 1 MAK key (only 100 activations)
Technet Standard:

  • Windows Server 2008: Standard and Enterprise = 1 MAK key, DataCenter = 1 MAK key. Total of 1.000 activation on Server 2008
  • Windows Server 2008 R2: Standard and Enterprise = 1 MAK key.
So you can not say you don't get enough Windows Server activations. But on desktop software as Windows 7, Windows XP, Office 2007 and Office 2010 you get 2 x 10 or 5 x 10 activations at the max."

and, the keys will NOT expire when your subscription ends !

if you want check for yourself, then all "FACTS" is from about halfway-down in the page....

Technet Standard Keys

EDIT: if you reinstall fx. W7 or Office 2010 regularly within 30 days, then do NOT activate it....
the normal grace-period of 30 days can also be extended using "Rearm", so if you are smart you can save activations....
