Tell folder to remember view type ie details or thumb

I am sure that XP used to remember whether a folder was last viewed in details/thumb preview mode etc.

Windows 7 seems to just switch it on or off for all folders.

Is there a way to get explorer to remember the way it viewed the folders the last time you were in that folder.

Hello Lee,

By default, the folder views of a folder opened from a specific location should show the same way they were when the folder window was last closed from that location.

If a folder can be open from more than one location, then each location will have a separate folder view remembered for it. For example, C:\Users\(user-name)\Pictures vs Start Menu -> Pictures vs Start Menu -> Personal folder -> Pictures.

This is not happening. I am only using one windows explorer window and it never remembers the previous state, it only uses the current definition - ie icons or details.

You could try resetting all folder views back to default to see if that may help you set how you want them per folder afterwards.

I tried this. It resets to default details. But as soon as you go to thumbnails it stays that way

I want it to remember it always. So, if I go back and forth to a folder within the same windows explorer it remembers the view option for that particular folder and not apply a universal view to all folders.

XP did this just fine (as with most things) until later windows screwed it all up

If you are doing this in a library folder, then this is normal. All included folders in a library share the same folder view. If you change the folder view in one included folder in the library, they all change to that.

If you go to say the C:\Users\Public folder, change it to say Medium Icons view, does any folder you open from this same window still show their own view settings and not Medium Icons?

That seems to work. However, as soon as I go into My Documents it seems to ignore all previous states and switches to a universal state. Trouble is all my files and folders are in My Documents

The view settings will only be applied per individual specific folder at that location. While in C:\Users\(user-name)\My Documents, set the folder view how you like and close it. Is it still that way when you open it next?

It should, but say if you opened My Documents from the Start Menu instead of at C:\Users\(user-name)\My Documents in Windows Explorer, it wouldn't since it was opened from a different location.
