How do I rember view settings in windows 7?

E.g I would like some folders to be viewed as list by default so everytime I go to that folder unless i specify it to be thumbnails it will be in list view

Right Click any blank space inside the target and choose view / choose the type.
OR
In top right of Windows Explorer you'll see a little box with a drop down, (More options) that gives view options as well.

Should just set it to what you want and Windows will remember it for that folder.

Unless Im mis-understanding what you mean. It should just restore that view every time you open the folder.

With one exception:
Lets say your Music folder is located at C:/My Music

If you set the list view in your library (or access it from Start menu), everytime you open the Music Library folder it will remember.

if However you go directly there:
My Computer/ C/ My Music ... you may have to set the view again going that way.

Dunno why ..

Hello Marcus,

Is this in a Library folder? If so, it will not remember a folder view setting like this in them. Arrange by is only available in the Library folders. The arrange by options will vary depending on the folder template of the library folder. While all Included Folders and subfolders in a library will always share the same folder view. You can have separate "Arrange by" view settings in each folder in the library though.

Brink, we went through this problem of individual folder settings not being saved with Vista and it was solved with Windows Explorer Folder View settings - Vista Forums .

Is there not a similar solution for Windows 7? I'm amazed Microsoft hasn't fixed this.

One explanation and the closest thing to a solution is at http://www.sevenforums.com/newreply.php?p=87455 , but I haven't tried it yet. What do you think?
The problem is the same as vista and XP usually. The BagMRU size isn't big enough to accomodate all the folders, When it runs out of space, it loses folder settings. The following registry file ups the MRU size to 20,000 folders:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell]
"BagMRU Size"=dword:00004e20

im havin a similar issue / the same, not sure, anyhow

When i enter here
C:\Users\Mike\Documents\Stardock\IconPackager\Icons\

Set the view i wish, close the folder / or go back, to here

C:\Users\Mike\Documents\

the view is the same as it was in
C:\Users\Mike\Documents\Stardock\IconPackager\Icons\

my guess is that it shouldn't be like that, i should be able to set individual settings for each folder, no matter where they are, Correct?

Hello xTL,

Just to make sure, is this from inside a library? The library locations work differently. Included folders in a library share the same folder view no matter which folder it's set it.

The default folder view for the My Documents folder is "Details" with the "Documents" folder template. What did you set the C:\Users\Mike\Documents\Stardock\IconPackager\Icons folder view as?

xTL,

You could place or leave them in your C:\Users\Mike\My Documents folder, then use the tutorial below to change the My Documents button in the Start Menu to actually open to your user folder location instead of the library location. This way you can set the folder view how you like at the user folder location, and have a quick way to open it there.

If I'm understanding the question correctly...

There are litterally thousands of complaints from users about this issue of not remembering folder view, size and location settings. Many of those are in these forums.

Someone here wrote a little program to address the problem. I personally went for WindowManager From desksoft. It has it's quirks, but works pretty well.

Cyberbiker, Is this only from within a library location? All included folders in a library will share the same folder view.

If not, then resetting folder views back to default should allow you to afterwards.
It does seem to be within all folders included in the Documents Library. An easy solution would be to remove the folders from the library, however, I do not have a choice for Exclude from Library when I right click on any of the folders in the Library, as instructed in the MS support guidance. There is a choice on all of them for Include in Library.

Cyberbiker,

Since this is in the Documents library, you could place your files in your actual C:\Users\(user-name)\My Documents folder instead of from the library location. Next, to make it easier to open, you can change the Start Menu "Documents" button to open to your user folder location instead of the default library location. The user folder location will allow you to set you folder views how you like without affect other folders.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...der-buttons-open-users-instead-libraries.html

If you wanted to remove a included folder in the library, then this may be able to help.

From what help docs in MS support say, the Library does not contain documents and folders, it contains shortcuts to them. All my files are already in C:\Users\(user-name)\My Documents. However, the top level folders in My Documents also appear in the
Documents Library.

If I simply delete a top level folder from the Documents Library, it will nto delete it from My Documents. Is that your understanding?

It seems Microsoft would have made the role of Libraries clearer if the folder icons within them were shortcut icons instead of normal folder icons.
