so i have two programs that monitor my CPU temp and they both read very different. RealTemp and PC Probe 2 are what i have. RealTemp shows idle CPU temp at 50c, while PC Probe 2 show idle temp at 30c. if i reboot now, and go to my BIOS it shows the CPU temp to be about 30c. 50 seams a little high for idle especially sense i have a good heat sink on my CPU. in addition to the heat sink i have purchased a new case, cleaned all components of dust, and purchased two 140mm fans to go with the included two 120mm fans.

which program should i trust?

I use & put my trust in RealTemp, as it monitors each core's DTS(digital thermal sensor),
which give a very accurate temperature reading.
But 50°C at idle is a bit high. If it never goes under 50C, you may have stuck sensor(s).

i like that about RealTemp too. the readings move around a lot, its not stuck at one temp. it just interesting how both my BIOS and PC Probe 2 read 30c and RealTemp reads 50.

I use Real Temp 360 plus do you have the correct TJ max set for you processor like mine is 100 for the C2Duo E8400 which might make you reading different then Probe 2. I like the Real Temp 360 because it can monitor the GPU temp also at the same time as the cores.

Rear fans are controlled by Fan mate controllers. temps inside case are monitored by probe and temps coming out the top exhaust are also monitored, temps as of right now 20c inside and 22.7 out the exhaust. Download and use either Speccy or CoreTemp.

Both are adequate (and free).

I've been using SIW for most of my sensor monitoring.
Also Probe II that came with my ASUS MB agrees with SIW.

I don't have the link to hand but the Intel diagnostic program for their CPUs can load test your CPU and give you how much under the max temp you are.

I definitely recommend Coretemp which is what I use to monitor my Q6600 quad core (you can display each core or only the highest temp core temp by your time display), settings are substantial and drill deeper than just temp, you also can set temp alarms if you so desire:

No idea but try a third monitor and see which one it agrees with...I would trust coretemp as I have verified the accuracy of the displayed temps myself against the reported temps in the os and bios on my pc.

By the way....CoreTemp also runs x64 if you so desire (v99.8.0-64bit)

PC Probe temps are BIOS temps, i.e. both report readings from the same motherboard sensor. RealTemp/CoreTemp/SpeedFan temps are always higher, because they report readings from sensors within the CPU cores themselves.

I'm not familiar with either program, but I do know that with SpeedFan, it is easy to confuse the identity of the values, and display the graphics or system temps, thinking that they are the CPU.

Ok. So RealTemp is more accurate. So is 50c a better temp, sense it's coming from inside the CPU? Does it equate to 30c coming from the BIOS?

You mean higher temps right? Can't see the cores having a lower temp than the CPU, at least not yet.

As I said in a previous post, 50C is a bit high for idle(but not critical), depending on the ambient temperature. How hot does it get under full load?
For example, RealTemp reports both my CPU cores at 30°C on idle, with the temp in my room at 23°C; while under full load, the cores reach high 50's or rarely low 60's. That's quite good for an OC'd CPU, but it has an aftermarket heatsink/cooler, with correct TIM application & good case airflow.
When you changed your stock heatsink/cooler, which thermal compound did you use? Maybe there's too much or too little thermal compound(or a low quality one) between CPU & heatsink. Touch the heatsink(carefully) after the PC has been running for a couple of hours & see if it's hot/cool to the touch. If it's not hot/warm, it's either a badly seated heatsink/wrong TIM application. Try reseating the heatsink & correctly apply TIM and see if it makes a difference.

All that I can speak to is my experience, with my hardware, and the cores have always been cooler than the CPU temp. I imagine that is because the CPU temp is an accumulation of heat from all of the cores, while the cores are more independent.

Interesting. In my experience, the cores are always hotter than the CPU, since the cores produce the most heat and the CPU dissapates it via the heatsink & cooler.

Interesting. In my experience, the cores are always hotter than the CPU, since the cores produce the most heat and the CPU dissapates it via the heatsink & cooler.

Perhaps that is because you are running Intel, and I'm running AMD. It has been this way on all of my AMD rigs, as long as I can remember.
