Well with the ambient temps at 25C (thats what like 75ish F)?

Mid 60s is probably fine under Prime load.

Keep in mind, even under heavy real world loads, you'll likely never get it that hot.

I would just for curiosity sake, let Prime run over night. At least 10hrs.

If it can hold up without any issues, and the temps stay basically where they are right now i would say the main problem is a unstable overclock. the hardware itself should be fine.

Perhaps I missed it but what type of cooler is on the CPU?

Surely the didnt do a factory 4.0 Ghz OC on stock cooling did they?

If it is stock, you may want to consider picking up a bit better cooler for the CPU. Doesnt have to be anything super expensive. Maybe just do your own mild OC if you so choose.

If you want to run at the factories 4.0 OC, you will need a very good air cooler at least IMO.

Wish the cooler is listed in my System Specs but it is this Cooling Prolimatech Megahalems Rev B CPU Cooler Socket 775/1156/1366

And 25C is about 78F

I am also leaving it run the Prime 95 test on stock settings until I wake up when ever that might be as it is 4:20am here and the birds have now woken up

I just overlooked it then, apologies.


I do not know much about that cooler, but it should be just fine.

And with those ambient temps, Id would certainly say the prime loads temps in mid 60s are just fine.

So where does my problem lay ? Is it the cooling? A faulty processor ? What do I say to the manufacture when I call them later to complain ?

TBH, it's up to this company to work out - they're the ones who sold you a pre-overclocked system that is completely unstable

That CPU cooler is in the top ten of air coolers - and to hit 100c almost instantly:shock:


Either they have incorrectly installed /seated it or they have pumped a ridiculous amount of vcore (CPU voltage) through it to acheive 4.0ghz (or even left the setting on AUTO )


If it's fine @ stock settings - then it could be any number of things.

I'd err on it being bad settings (not overclocked properly, let alone stress tested )...

Ok have spoken to the manufacture who were extremely helpful and understanding and they want the Rig back ASAP to test it all out and were extremely sorry for the hassle I have been having.

On another note I have run Prime 95 at stock 2.8GHz setting and everything set to stock memory etc and the system still crashed although the temperatures were all in the lower 60c mark. The manufacture think it is either the cooler, motherboard or ram not sure about the ram part though. So I have it until tomorrow afternoon and then fortunately back to my old rig, so glad I didn't get rid of it in the end

Gutted I will be going back to the old rig it will be like driving a snail compared to a Porsche

I have now reverted back to the over clock and I am just using it doing basic stuff and this is the current Temp readout room temp 30c .

lol, it doesn't happen often, but have you checked that the little plastic "protection" sticker has been removed from the base of the HSF? Seen it happen once or twice, pissed myself laughing at one tech I worked with when he melted a Q6600 back when they just came out, haha. Good luck with the company that built your rig, sounds like they should fix it no worries, usually the hardest part is getting them to admit that their product may in fact be faulty.

Actually Thorn that was one of the main reasons from buying from them. They have a reputation second to none and bend over backwards to help be it support or purchasing advice. The Rig will be be picked up tomorrow and be thoroughly checked out and whatever needs doing will be done no question about that.

I have reset the values back to the Over Clock just in case it was fluke and ran the Prime test again and the processor rocketed back up to 100c So there is defiantly a problem somewhere. I will leave it in their capable hands, whatever happens I will have a correctly working system back by Tuesday.

Got a Txt message this morning to say the rig had arrived and that they were checking could take 3-5 working days 3 Hours later get another Txt message to say the fault has been found repaired and they will send the Rig out to me tonight so I should get it back tomorrow hopefully That's what I call great service

Thing that bothers me is I asked them to run the Prime test on it but in the 4 hours they had it they could not have stressed it that much, maybe they didn't need to as they seemed to have found what was wrong, needless to say when I get it back the first thing I will be doing is stress testing it with Prime to see how the numbers look. All in all I am happy with their service though.

Just as a foot note, I am using my old Rig again, it is bringing to light all the old problems I had with it and Win 7 sound, lag etc, makes me appreciate my new baby all the more and how well it all works together apart from running hot it is an awesome machine

They forgot to remove the protective plastic cover on the bottom of the heatsink


If that really was the case, i doubt they would admit it.

My guess is, if that is right and not some static message, that the Fan was possibly replaced or reseated.
Or other fan or heatsink, possibly on the board or case.
Have to wonder what Thermal Paste they use.

Is this water cooled at all? Possible air bubble int he line was removed?

haha, yeah it sounds like a "Whoops, forgot to peel that off" situation, they perhaps even they forgot the thermal paste.
Sadly, I have forgotten to peel off the protective sticker once, and only once. Considering that was a 38 hour day and assembled almost 50 computers
With a bit of luck you'll get her back and all will be good.

Just rang the Tech support and was told the heat sink had been damaged and not correctly seated. Resulting in the overheating.

So they have replaced the processor and also put on a new cooling system

Now I can't wait until it arrives back in 2 hours time

I certainly can't fault them for service and repair time.

Ok Guys processor and Cooler replaced ran Prime 95 now for a while ambient temp in room is 28C and here are the result still warm I think but not a 100C on all four cores like it was before the repair.

Personal opinion....

I'm a little concerned about those high temps, especially long term. They could easily shorten the lifespan of the processor over the long run.

It's nice that the systems is running at 4gig, but remember, that processor wasn't rated to run at those speeds, and certainly not for the long haul. In my opinion, if you're going to run one of those processors at 4gig, it should be run on water cooling, not air.

With that said, what is the "warranty" of that system??? Something to think about.

Of course this is only my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt.

BTW, I'm running my i7-930 at 3.5gig with a Noctua NH-C12P SE14 CPU cooler, in an Antec P182 case, my ambient room temp is 80F/27C and these are my temps…



This is with my 4 120mm case fans avaraging 1400 RPMs!!! - http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-devices/81169-experience-gigabyte-motherboards-3.html#post775794 BTW, i'm replacing my case with a Cooler Master HAF-X, so that should help with the temps further.

One last point... I will make the argument that you're probably never going to stress your system in real world everyday use like prime 95 does, even in gaming, but... and high heat can cause other components to fail as well.

BTW What are your idle temps? Mines 44ish.

Yeah,, that why I say,, over-clocking is not a poor mans hobby.
Cause no matter what you do to a system, an over-clocked system is not going to last nearly as long as a stock clocked system. Regardless of cooling. your still pushing more voltage than the processor can actually handle which is why it is rated the way it is. It will last longer the cooler you keep it, but it won't last as long as it would at it's rated speed.

And in most (the majority) of circumstances, Over-Clocking gives a very minimal performance boost. 3 things to make a modern high end system faster....

A.) Faster CPU
B.) Faster Ram (this can also be minimal boost, depending on the system and what it is being used for)
B.) Faster Hard Drive
C.) Faster Video Card

One thing that doesn't matter much today, but I have actually seen a huge performance boost from, which surprised the hell out of me. Faster Refresh Rated Monitor, believe it or not.
