Who would have ever thought that browser wars could ever spawn browser choice? At the start of March 2010, Microsoft began rolling out the Browser Choice screen via Windows Updates to all Windows users in Europe who have Internet Explorer set as their default browser. The update is automatically delivered to Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP users in the European Economic Area. However, Europeans that have selected a non-IE browser as the default will get no piece of the European Commission’s “choice pie,” as, obviously, they are saturated with choice.

Well I don't know what all the fuss is about! I am and always have been a happy Internet Explorer user, never had any problems or security issues with it personally and yes I have tried Firefox and the like, just never got on with them. I chose to not even bother downloading the Browser choice update and have hidden it from future updates. Surely if it was that necessary to appease the EU commission it would have been made a mandatory update?

living in the UK the pre ordered copy of win7 i bought was the ultimate N version no IE shipped with it then the EU allowed MS a little leeway to give the consumers a choice so they allowed MS to bundle IE back with the OS as long as they (the consumers) also could be given the addional choice of browser which means if i want to completely uninstall IE i can unlike the plain versions of the OS where you cannot completely uninstall, only hide it so i guess i was a lucky one :D

It's a Laptop.
Shoot, my iMac didn't offer anything but "Safari," and being that I'm little slow at times it took all of 30 seconds to figure out that it wasn't fair. So, being a resourceful fellow even if I'm slow in the head, I contacted the EU people and asked for the browser choice to be placed in Snow Leopard 10.6.2, and they said that it would be unfair to do so because all members of the EU Commission use Mac's, and they didn't want to screw up a good thing. . .whatever.

Yes it is stupid, albeit it is now the law of the land in the EU. :D

ia gree, but if the EU are forcing it on them, then it should be offered to all users regardless of browser, [sarcasm] what about all those people who have been dileberately mislead and mis informed about using other browsers and didnt know they had an option [/sarcasm]

Microsoft didn't willingly make that decision: the European Union mandated that Microsoft do something to allow users to download other browsers.

Well seriously, if it doesn't come shipped with a browser how do you download one if you have no apparatus to view webpages with to begin with?
Users were notified to download a web browser installation file in advance.

actually the browser choice screen was microsofts idea. the eu voted to make them remove ie altogether. microsoft panicked over that idea and was able to come to the ballot screen compromise with the eu.

We have a tutorial for that - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/19494-firefox-3-5-1-download-without-browser.html

Well, not to be argumentative here, but what's the use of that? I mean, why would someone want to have a batch file to download a browser, when they could just use another computer to download the setup file to a USB?
