Using Google search type "plug in time clocks" or "plug in timers". I tried that & it brought up Amazon here in Australia.

They are just a small timer that plugs into the power outlet & you plug your device into it. It has a settable clock that can be set to turn a device plugged in, on at a certain timer & also off at a certain time. They are often used to switch lights on at home to give the impression that someone is at home when your are away on vacation etc..

I can't give you a picture of one as I can only get Australian web sites for one & the US ones may well be different.

I think I know what you mean. Offtopic, in Breaking Bad they used one to blow up the Laundry laboratory by setting it to go off at a certain time. Now I know what you mean. Good idea, thank you.

Cranky, have you looked in BIOS for the setting that will turn off that port when the computer turns off? We have different boards, but all of mine has one on it. It may be worded different but it will look something like this.

crankypenguin there are some things you haven't got back to us on.
1. Have you tried swapping USB ports between the two externals and the results?
2. Have you tried a USB 2.0 port for testing and the results?
3. As essenbe has posted a couple of times or so; have you been all through your bios to verify the proper settings. (I have never seen Gigabyte bios) so I really can't help you there.
4. Why is their a MBR on drive (L).

Another thought or two; what is the boot order?
I would also make sure hibernate and sleep are disabled.
Are you Dual booting?
It's smelling more like a bios setting more than anything else.

Layback Bear- I tried every port (USB2 and 3), keeps blinking. Tried unplugging the USB cord after I shut off the computer and unplug the power supply cord from the psu..keeps blinking. I do not have such options Steve, this is not a very good motherboard ) only costs about a 100 bucks and its a 970, not a 990 so I am still using the old school bios layout, not that, that makes a difference. Layback, I have no idea what the MBR is doing on the L drive. I purchased it not too long ago, maybe 2 months. I installed my system long before that. I can boot just fine without this drive. This is not a dual boot system, it's single boot. The boot order is 1st SSD 2nd DVDROM 3rd is turned off. The MBR is in that 32mb unallocated partition when I hover mouse over it and press properties. Perhaps I was sold a used drive as new? But the hours on, would correspond with the time I have had it and powered on. Maybe the LED light is corrupted somehow, although it responds when drive is writing / reading just as any other external would.

May have found an answer. This guy had same problem, his too was in MBR format, he reformated and it fixed his problem. So now I have to move around 700gbs off it, reformat it and see if that work....this will take a while.

Well I used cli diskpart to extend into the volume that had the extra 32mbs of space. I will reboot and see if anything has changed.

I am back. The drive is as was, light continues to haunt me, but on the positive side, when the computer is off, it's just the light that is on, the disk is NOT spinning. I may have to live with an external drive that has a light that never goes out. The light of annoyance ? I did notice that this 2tb is slightly bigger in MB's than all my other 2tb drives, not sure if that is of any significance. I am thankful to you guys for taking the time to help me, but this is just a really strange case I must admit.

After reading this guide, I understand a little more and I am not worried about it being a MBR Disk vs a GPT disk. I have both gpt capable disks and dynamic disks Every disk I checked has a MBR in properties when you click the left side in Disk Management. . http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/26193-convert-mbr-disk-gpt-disk.html
