Solved The Size of Windows 7

I have Windows 7 installed on a 500GB hard drive so I have a lot of space not used, is it possible to partition this hard drive (with Windows 7 in place) ? and if I can how much space would Windows need ? any advice appreciated

Even if you DO install a lot of apps a max size of 60 GB is MORE than enough for the W7 partition in 99.9999% of cases. I have LOADS of apps on a desktop running W7 x 64 enterprise and I still have 15 GB free on a 55 GB partition.

The suggestion above would also take into account retore points, shadow copies and temporary files. If the OP is sufficient in the process of cleaning redundant files then you're correct 60GB will be sufficient.

I've seen in some cases that over 30GB has been freed up by deleting all bu the latest restore point.

I did it , well not quite right as I made it 150GB but better then 500GB, thanks again Orbital Shark, very happy with that !

That's great, now you can use the secondary partition as a data drive for all your music/pictures/documents/videos.

Also, you can Shrink the current volume to exactly what you need and Extend the new partition to make it bigger

So very true. This is often unaccounted for when setting up a primary partition. It's a rather double-edged sword in that it takes up a bunch of space and is of no use at all... until it saves you.

to the OP - while I may be stating the obvious to some - keep in mind that partitioning your 2nd 500GB drive into 3 drives is "logical" partitioning on the same physical drive.

You will need backups of all 3 assigned drive letters (E:\ F:\ G:\ ?) as you will lose it ALL if you have a physical drive failure.
