The usual story:

I got a new laptop recently and itis starting to getting on my nerves. The random freezing and restarting, when I am doing nothing, when I am browsing the web, when I am watching hulu. I have papers to write and videos to watch!

The computer specs:
Asus Notebook UL80VT
Intel Core Duo 1.3GHz
pre-installed Win7 Home premium 64-bit

What else do you need to know?

Bare with me when I try understand your replies. I don't know a lot of the technical terms.

Thanks in advance! I really hope to get this fix myself instead of shipping it back to Asus..

Welcome to SF!

My debugger tells me it is probably a hardware issue. Try downloading Memtest86 and running at least 5 passes.

Also open an elevated command prompt and run sfc /scannow. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/783-elevated-command-prompt.html

Are you doing any overclocking? Any RAID?

Thanks for the welcome, Jonathan_King.

I tried the sfc/scannow and it said everything was fine.
I tried the memtest over pass #8 and said there were no errors so far. I'll leave it overnight tonight.

I don't know what overclocking is, so I think not....?

Thanks for the link, usasma. I'll read through it and try some of their suggestions.

So I ran the memtest overnight and half the day.

I got two errors when I decided to exit. Should I have let it run until it was done [if it does end]?

Two of the errors were under "Tst 5", "Pass 2"...
What should I do to repair them?

Unfortunately, there is not much to be done about RAM errors. Run the test again, just to be sure, and consider buying more RAM. If the machine is under warranty, by all means, return it.

Actually, after updating the latest BIOS from Asus's site, no random freezing/restarting since!
Hopefully it stays this way.

RAM test never ends - it'll just run until you stop it.

Most times you can't fix RAM errors - although cleaning the slots and sticks may help (as may a BIOS flash occasionally).
But you can test the sticks in different slots (in different combinations to see if it's just one stick or just one slot that causes the problem.
Beyond that, it's time to replace the defective sticks.

Some people say it's OK to keep RAM with a couple of errors (I'm not one of them). The way I look at it is as if it's an error in your checkbook. It isn't the number of the error that's the problem - it's the location of the error that makes it a problem (1¢ isn't a problem, but 1 million is). Since I can't tell where the error will be, I'd suggest that the stick must be replaced.

Run RAM test again overnight to see if the BIOS flash changed things.

Yeah, I spoke too soon. I still get the random restarts.

Since it's a new laptop, I am wary of opening it up and messing around with the insides..
I'll run the memtest overnight again.

Thanks.
