I got this from overclock net supposedly from Intel.

Core i7 specifications:

Vcore Max = 1.375
Tcase Max (CPU temperature) = 68c
Tjunction (Core temperature) = 73c

Checked today and my fans won't be in for a couple of more days. At that time I'm going to remove the cooler and check things and install the two new fans and go from their. I might of installed to little or to much #5; I should be able to tell by the pattern it leaves. I will get back. Something is wrong some where. It might be a faulty cooler.The in and out tubes to the radiator are never over 2 deg c different. I use a infrared dot gun to read them. Where did you get the tmax info?

From Overclockers net. They were talking about your CPU and heat problems. One of the guys gave those numbers and said they were from intel. From what I have read that is a good CPU but very prone to heat problems. You may have to get a bigger cooler. The reviews I was reading seemed to be that anyone who could get over 3.8-4.0 was using real watercooling.

I just might have to go to all out water cooling, which will mean another 2 weeks of research. I will check out o/c.net.

There are many O/C net groups. I don't remember which one I was on, but certainly any of them can give info on watercooling. They are the experts. If you want to try air cooling, and you have a large case read these comments on the Noctua NH-D14 . But it is a monster.

Tcase is 67.9°C add 5°C for core temps (Tjunction) is 72.9°C.

VID Voltage Range is 0.800v-1.375V (max CPU voltage)

Thank you all and it feels great to get all this help. After doing lots of things and reading even more I have come to the conclusion that I'm asking the H50 to do more than it was designed to do. One of the four fans I ordered came in. So I'm waiting. I don't want to give up on the H50 until I change the fans. Before I go any more crazy, I just might sit on this until Corsair H100 is available. Should be soon because it is being advertised in the U.K.

I am not really sure I helped very much. It's kind of hard if you can't see whats going on. I'm sure you know what I mean. You may be right about the H50, it probably wasn't made to handle the amount of heat you are getting. Thanks for keeping me updated and keep me advised of the progress. I'l do what little I can to help.

With dual Noctua 120mm fans in case air push pull exhaust I'm able to oc my AMD Phenom 3.4 quad to an absolute stable 4.0 with my H50. I will at some point go with a H70 and move the H50 to my second quad rig currently air cooled via a large Zalman. I've been doing quarterly blow out of the fans, case and radiator and afterwards I do see temps fall a little bit so there is still maintenance with these systems as we all know. Dave 76 that article on 80 way TIM was a great read. That's what I call testing. I will stick with my Acrtic 5 poly. I haven't given up on the H50 yet. I'm in the process of a polish job down to 2000 grit. The center was high. I'm still waiting for my 2 Noctua 120's. I still will be getting the H100 when it comes out. The method and amount to TIM is still iffy in my mind. A flatter surface will need less but how much less and where to put it. I'm also thinking on pre heating the #5 tube in water before applying.

That was a good article, I read it too. I tint mine first, then 1 small line straight down the middle of the CPU. That way all cores are covered for sure.

I spread paste around with a glove or something around until its an even surface that isn't too thick but doesn't show much of the CPU base and doesn't leak off the CPU socket. Standard paste. Premium paste is like premium HDMI cables. Pointless.

au contraire on the HDMI cables. Standard computer data and short runs yes, hd audio, video and long runs....not so much.

MJF, I think it just goes to show that there are several ways to do it, and several ways that work. Methods vary on the type of heatsink you are using. Direct contact heatsinks are usually done different. Whatever method you use, if it works it's not wrong.

I have always used AS5, but after noticing how quickly that the surface of my heatsink eroded, after lapping it to a mirror surface, I have been wanting to find something better. According to your, and other's statements, Shin-Etsu may be what I'm looking for. However, ebaying it, I found that there are at least 2 versions of it... X23-7783D and G751 . Another unspecified item that I found that was in a different color tube, suggests that there may be more. Which of these do you use?

Did you read the article posted by Dave76, 80-way Thermal Interface Material Performance Test it is a pretty comprehensive test of thermal pastes.

Arctic Silver 5 - Sold at FrozenCPU and NewEgg in multiple sizes. Curing time is highly recommended.​

I've been using the OCZ Freeze paste and it has proven it's self well....it is very thick and I do like the X application style then a healthy twist and tighten. I will have to try using a masking tape square then a glove for total thin coverage, but in the end you don't really know till you remove the cooler just what coverage you've got.

Thanks, I thought that was an interesting article.

During that search I found mention that most brands are good, a few are bad.
The application method depends on several variables, the only way to check your coverage is to remove the heatsink.
A little too much or not enough will change the effectiveness of any application method.

I use the plastic wrapped finger method, very thin, on the CPU and heatsink. This makes even coverage on both surfaces.
The key is flat surfaces and no air gaps. I have not lapped anything and still have good success with temps, I'm sure someday I'll run across a stubborn one and lap it.
